Subject: Chicago Tri - bike rental and swim course
Hi! I have done 2 olympic tris (Both NYC) and have signed up for the Chicago Olympic tri next month. At this point I am not a competitive tri athlete - I want to finish (hopefully a little faster than my earlier times) and have a good time. Looking for recommendations where I can rent a bike in Chicago. I currently bike on a Cannondale Synapse (hybrid). I am not picky about the bike - just want it to be a good quality bike. I would rather not spend $400 to ship my bike!
Also are there any currents in Lake Michigan? Only open water I have done is in the Hudson where the current takes you along for the ride - so want to be mentally prepared for the Chicago swim.
thanks

No currents but it will be cold, so plan on a wetsuit.  Also, how is your bike going to cost 400.00 to get there from anywhere in the world??

$400 is the approx cost quoted to ship a bike from NYC to Chicago!!! If I take it with me on the flight, it is $150 each way if the bike is in a hard case (so more $$ for that) and I will be worrying about bike damage and bike arriving (and not getting lost) as I will be flying in the day prior to the tri.

Gotcha.....I've shipped/flown bikes dozens of times and the airfare price is pretty common....although SW, Frontier, and Alaska air are about 1/2 that cost....or sometimes free. I've shipped from St. Louis to Arizona and Florida for 50-75.00 but yes, you would need a case. I'm pretty confident though, from all the times I've done this, that if you did some homework you could cut down your costs considerably. Not a big deal since you just started, but if you decide to keep at triathlon don't fear flying/shipping your bike.....it's a piece of cake.

Contact Endure It! out of Naperville. They're a big tri store in the Chicago 'burbs. I suspect a lot of their coached athletes will be competing at Chicago, so they'll probably be on site for support. I know they rent wetsuits and wheels. Don't see anything on their website about bike rentals, but they are dealers for several brands of bikes (Cervelo, Trek, Scott), and may have a road bike demo available you could rent.

Your bike costs a lot to replace. Don't let it get rusty.
