I'll be registering for my next sprint sometime soon - the actual event is at the end of September. I'm debating whether to sign up as a novice again (it's only my second race) or go with AG (35-39). This time I'll be swimming freestyle (gosh darn it!) as opposed to breaststroke, so I'm not too worried about kicking others as much. On the flip side, this freestyle business is still new and who knows if I'll get panicky and revert to breaststroke.

Is there any benefit to starting in either group? The Novice will probably be a smaller wave; however, this is already a small race, so I'd be surprised if there is more than 80 AG women (I've been stalking the prior years' race results).

Despite the fact that I'd love to place, I don't think that's something I need to consider. Unless, of course, I manage to shave a good 40-45 minutes off my time. That might be a tad too optimistic for 12 weeks of training

Race novice.  There always seems to be this hurry, in triathlon, to move up in level or distance before one can say they are actually even accomplished at the level they're at.  Don't be in a hurry......make slow and steady progress for the best results and less chance of injury.  Enjoy the ride and be patient.

The fact that you're concerned about your result tells me you should race AG.

I'm not really concerned as I'm still too new at this to place - it's going to take some serious work to get that far, but I'm up for the challenge

LB - kind of what I was thinking too. Didn't know if there was some kind of important piece of info I was missing.

To me, the only important piece is that you should look at your training and racing as a long term commitment if you want to truly enjoy the lifestyle.  This sport is littered with flame outs. Don't be in a hurry to "move up" in level or distance.  Train steady.  Race smart.

You mentioned you'd love to place. That's why I referenced it.

FTR.....I raced AG from day 1. I never saw a reason NOT to.

Novice sounds fine. You're still getting used to a new stroke and will have a bunch of others around in a similar situation. From what I've seen, it's largely about the swim with this category. Easing people's fears of the water.

Since it's a smaller race, they may let you switch later on too, if you think things are going really well. A local type one even let me switch categories after they released the swim wave order.

So did my husband. I'm just not strong when it comes to swimming, so the fewer folks I have to battle it out with the better.
