Swimming the Olympic Distance at the Chicago Tri. I have only done triathlons in DC. I am a 54 year old woman and I do triathlons for the love of competition and to stay in shape, but I am slow. Haha Goal is survival and improve time from my last tris.

1. I don't want to wear a wetsuit. Will I freeze?

2. How is the swim? Is it choppy? Is there current?

Thanks,

Looks like water temps right now are fluctuating between 72-78.  It's fairly protected but can get some small waves if the wind is up....no current.  If the water temps hold you won't freeze.  Why wouldn't you wear a wetsuit (if legal) for an oly though?  Just curious.

I did some research on this about a month ago. Average temperature in Monroe harbor is 65-75 July/August, 2 years ago it was 62 and I read a post that someone without a wetsuit came out with mild hypothermia. If the water current brings the cold upper peninsula water you will wish you had one.

Lake Michigan is a deep and cold lake. It can be 80 degrees one day and if there is a a strong wind/storm, 55-60 the next. I doubt that swim has ever been above the wet suit cutoff. Monroe Harbor is a somewhat protected harbor but it can get choppy, you should be prepared.

I have never worn a wetsuit and I don't own a wetsuit. It just seems like another thing I would worry about. Will it bother me and will it be hard to get on and off? If I rent a wetsuit I won't have a chance to practice with it on. Perhaps I need to buy one. HELP! Advice Please.

Oh yeah, an oly in 60 without a wetsuit? Not a good idea imo. That's about the same temp as in the lake I train in this year and it's needed.

I wouldn't be able to offer some advice about buying one, as the one I have is not even a swimsuit, but it keeps me warm, that's all I need at the moment.

I did the Olympic last year, and will do it again this year. I don't recall the exact temperature, but you swim in the marina, which is protected quite well. Wetsuit is helpful to keep you buoyant, and also a little warm. Do I think it is necessary, no. But if you own one, I would wear it.

I'm sure there are tons of folks doing this race without a wet suit. The amount of people they put on the course is crazy. The temps will probably be in the low to mid 70's. It only drops after a big storm and then the surface water warms back up quickly.
