Subject: go by minutes or distance?
When looking at the plans, can't remember which to use. With walking through some of the run workouts I'd have to add time to cover the distance. If I stick with the time I will be underdoing the distances.

Go with time.  If you can't cover the distance in the prescribed time then you are not ready for it....which is absolutely fine. Almost all of your running should be easy at your level (I've watched your posts).  If you try to make the distance you will be running too much.  If you try to get the miles in the prescribed time you will blow up....which it appears you realize.  Your goal should be to raise your fitness without getting hurt......run the time, forget the distance. (for now)  Run at a comfortable pace.

Generally, time, but if you're using a stock training plan, sometimes it's best to make some minor adjustments to duration because you're a little slower or faster than the plan assumes.

Our bodies don't know pace or distance, only duration and intensity.

ETA:  If performing the prescribed duration and intensity doesn't get you relatively close to the planned distance, then you may want to reconsider your choice of plan.

My plan has me doing both. I think there's a time and a place for both, running. Same for the bike.

Thanks guys.
Feeling like this will be my year. I'm starting early, have gotten better about consistency, will keep it Z1-2, no time for injuries!

Thanks again, it's starting to fall into place. My problem was when I was putting together my plan for the next two months, the run times were way too short, but getting them up made the distances I could cover a little too long. So I'm going with the longer plans and will keep moving for the time and assume the speed will come later.

It depends a bit on your goal and distance you intend to race. If you're planning for an 1/2 of full IM, then distance. I've seen people plan around time and only to realize that they simply couldn't complete the distance within the cut off. For short distances and/or if you are starting out, definitely time.

Time is still more heavily weighted in your friend's cases. It's not really supposed to be 100% time for all aspects of anything, even though people can make it seem like that. People swing to extremes a bit easily. It's just an example of why one should still be conscious of distance.
