Subject: For those who occasionally ask.... I came here originally as my kid started his triathlon journey.....he's running in college now and holding his elite triathlon card. From time to time someone will ask me how he's doing there, so I thought I'd post his latest work. He went to college having trained as a triathlete, but with a 1:53:XX 800, a 4:19 mile, and a 16:00 5k (also cross country). His idea was to take the run scholarship to build his run before trying to come back to triathlon after he left school. It was an eye opener for him because he had never ran more than 35 miles in a week. He has been brought along slowly after having a Freshman year full of minor, nagging injury from trying to increase his run to quickly. Last week he went 31:33 for his first ever 10K (cross country). 5k splits were 15:48 and 15:45. His miles are up to 57-60 per week so he has quite a ways to go, but seems to be on a good track now. His goal is a sub 30:00 track 10K but that's a tall order for a kid who's body may be starting to betray him for fast long distance running. He's a tad under 6'5" now and has been as heavy as 180 as he becomes a man and builds muscle......but has been holding this season between 165-170 laying off the salty college food and running a bit more. Indoor season starts in a month and he will go back to running the 800 and mile, along with the 1200 leg of the DMR. His training intervals are pointing toward a sub 1:50 800 and 3:50-3:55 1500....so again, his dream of a truly fast Oly triathlon run is a maybe as his body matures. He's 20 in a month so I suppose time will tell. He still swims twice a week and has been able to keep his 500 SCY time just a bit over 5:00. But for sure, it's hard to say how this all translates to his triathlon dreams....if at all. The good news for him, I suppose, is they are building a velodrome here and he has his eye on the 4K pursuit as cycling is still his first love. Carry on......and thanks to those who have asked how he's doing. Edited by Left Brain 2017-11-14 8:34 PM
