Subject: Profile Design Aero water bottle
I recenlty purchased the profile design water bottle for my aero bars. I was going to use it for my long bike ride this weekend, so I filled it up, went looking for the top, and realized that the yellow mesh thingy they give you is the top. At first, I thought this was odd, but thought, hey, smart people must've designed this, so maybe there's something I'm missing here. I put the water bottle in my aero bars, clogged the hole with the mesh thingy, and headed out. The first tiny bump I hit, water comes flying out all over my bike and legs, so I readjust the mesh. Second bump, the mesh thing comes flying out and I've lost half of my water onto my legs and shoes. Is there something I'm missing here? Where is the real top? Do people actually use this thing or is there a better product out there? Thanks for any input!

I read about this recently on a review, they considered it a POS!

A friend of mine has a different brand, I forget the name of it now.  It has a porous foam block thing in the top 1-2" or so, fluid pour in fine and the screw top is solid with a nice big straw.  I'm looking at getting one of those.

BTW, I just emailed him, I'll forward the brand if someone else doesn't...

I haven't hit this extreme yet but what many do is shove a shower poofie in there.

I still haven't made the switch so I can't comment on it.

Replace the yellow netting with a shower poofie from the cosmetics department at Wal-mart, ~$1

I have one too, you have to stretch the yellow meshy thing out a bit to get it to work, and it's still pretty marginal for keeping water in. Others have suggested using a dish-washing scrubber. I'm thinking a bit of spongue might do the trick as well

Nope, the yellow mesh thing is supposed to be the top.  It's designed to let you refill the aerobottle easily on the fly, pouring water through the mesh.  Great concept, but it does pop out with any moderate bump.  To replace it, a (non-used ) shower poufy works great.

You won't be able to prevent all of the splashing, so they recommend that you only put water in an aerobottle.

I have more problems with the entire thing going flying off when I get a bump. The velcro strap must not be strong enough, cause I launched it twice on my last ride.

i think you should apply the duct tape concept here.  if you can't duct it, ---- it.

Is 'shower poofie' as correct a term as 'mesh thingy'?

Also, since the whole thing is kind of annoying, do most people just use this for races?

I purchased one last week.

I had the same experience you did. Trying to keep it level with the rubber bands was useless and the yellow thingy kept popping out. By the end of the ride my bike and I were sticky messes.

I used the bottle for my Oly this weekend and it work great. I bought the bracket that clips on to my aero bars and that held the bottle perfectly still even over rough roads. Also I jammed the sponge thing all the way in and sideways across the top 1/4 of the bottle. The spogy thing stayed in the whole time and I didn't spill one ounce. I will never race without out it as it helped my nutrition and hydration a lot on the bike.

you'll probably find people using it on training rides, at least longer ones.  You know the old "don't do anything new on race day" idea.  However, if you are only riding on relatively bumpy surfaces, you might want to find a nice shower poofie that keeps the liquid in, and then just scrap it til race day.  maybe strap it on a few rides prior, just to make sure all the pieces are still there.

With the poofie, I have no problems, so I use it for training and racing. Still looking for a red poofy so I can get a little faster.

I use the poofie too, and haven't had any problems. Allows it to be refilled quickly and no sloshing. I only put water in it, though, just to keep things neater.

If you have problems with the whole bottle flying off, you might try using the bracket. You're also supposed to use the big rubber bands, not just the velcro strap.

I only use mine during races--I tend to use a Camelbak for long training rides.

In every race I've done longer than a Sprint, at the first decent bump on the bike course, is a pile of yellow mesh Aerobottle plugs.

I replaced mine with the dollar store version (the term for which is "Whoozy whatzy" in our household). I needed the mounting bracket for my aerobars, but also find the velcro strap less than 100% effective so I used the rubber bands too.

The aerobottle is a great idea with less than perfect execution. Don't get me started on the uselessness of the instructions for the mounting bracket.

Well, Bear, I'll have to get a red 'poofie' because I too have a red bike, and it obviously has to match in order to go faster. And when I find my red poofie, I'll pick up an extra and send it your way.

I took Bear's advice and replaced the yellow thing with a shower poof.  Only I couldn't find red, so I have a pink one.  Hopefully it'll make me a little faster.

Anyway, I haven't had any problems using that with the rubber bands that came with the bottle.  The only time water has splashed out was when I was forced to ride through a big pothole.  Still, I only use water in it just in case.

Had this come up during my first tri this weekend. Ended up going to Wally World and bought a huge sponge (about 2") thick and cut to fit.

I found a round item that is approx. 1/4" larger diameter than bottle opening. Then took this item (ex. drinking glass) and held it tightly to the sponge. Cut the sponge while going around the drinking glass. When you cut the sponge this way it actually ends up somewhat flared on one end. Make any touch up trims that you need and get any loose pieces of sponge off the edges. Squeeze the sponge into the opening and your good to go.

And yes I too saw a lost yellow poofie at the beginning of the bike.

Thanks for all the tips- I'm glad to hear I'm not stupid for not being able to get a mesh thingy to work in a water bottle.

Why in the world wouldn't this product come with an optional top? Anyone want to go into business with me making water bottles that make sense?

Oh yeah, and the bracket instructions may as well be written in braille, they're terrible! I'm not even keeping those.

Oh, I'll have to give that a try! I have lost both the yellow mesh top and the shower poofy replacement (aka whoozy whatzy or  mesh thingy!) during races.  I also find that twisting the elastics around the bottle twice keep it more firmly in place.

As far as marketing a water bottle that make sense someone already beat you to it:

http://www.trifuel.com/Detailed/Revolution_Hydration_System-771.php

My advice would be to only use the Profile bottle on the trainer. The first time I used one there was practically no water left in it when I went to get a drink, and the second time I used it, one of the stupid rubber bands broke.

I love it. I needed a guy at the bike shop to install it. Took a bit of effort to get the netting correctly.

I love sipping on a bike ride. So easy to do.

Cheers

Subject: Just cover the opening with plastic wrap
I've always just used a piece of plastic wrap to cover the top of the aero bottle.
The rubber bands that hold the bottle to the aero bars will also hold the plastic in place.

I can't refill the bottle "on the fly" as easily this way, but then again the aero bottle + 2 regular water bottles is plenty of fluid for <50 miles. Any longer, the time saved by refilling with the mesh thingee doesn't seem worth the hassle of spilled fluid.

i have one of these and i love it! i bought the bracket for the bottle and its velcoed in quite tightly although it does rattle a bit when i go over bumps.
i have managed to get the yellow mesh to stay in quite well, i tend to fold it over a couple of times and place it in the top, rather than rolling it like i have seen others do.
i tend to drink so much more on a ride, and its great during races when you're on your aero bars, you dont have to sit up to get a drink from the bottle cage, the straw is practically in your mouth, just take a sip!

it has no lid so you can fill it up on the go, esp in longer races where they provide extra drink bottles at the aid stations.

use it in training to get used to it - big deal if you get splashed a bit. i use my sports drink in it too, and i find my bike gets a bit sticky from all the splashes, but just clean it at the end of your long ride, only takes a couple of minutes. i get splashed on my legs too, but combine that with the sweat and evrything else, i don't really have an issue with it....

as always, what works for some doesnt work for others!! try it and if you don't like it there are other options on the market...
