Subject: Tri'ing for Weightloss FAQ
Welcome to the BT Weightloss Forums, where all the big losers hang out (or at least, we're all HOPING to be big losers!). Here are some of the frequently asked questions:

1. What is a weight loss challenge? The challenges act like a weekly weigh in, sort of like a Weight Watchers (tm) meeting. Sometimes the challenges are with teams, sometimes as one big group. There are no winners - hopefully just a lot of losers.

2. How do i join a challenge? On average, the challenges go about 2-4 months. If you are new to the forum and want to join, you can either a) hop into one of the challenges already going or b) wait until the next challenge starts. Or both. All you need to do to join an ongoing challenge is post to the weekly challenge thread and introduce yourself.

3. How do the challenges work? By being accountable each week, you are more likely to lose weight. Each week, you check in with your starting weight, goal weight, loss/gain for that week, and overall loss/gain. Some groups or individuals also report in with body fat percentage and/or bodymetrics. Some challenges also add in a dietary or workout component - posting new recipes (w/ nutritional information), or adding in a new workout, or a certain number of sit ups each week, etc.

4. How many calories should i eat? how much weight should i lose? These are questions we can't really answer, since everyone is unique. There are tools online to roughly figure out daily caloric intake, resting metabolic rate (rmr), basal metablic rate (bmr), body mass index (bmi), goals for a healthy weight, etc. Talk to your doctor and a nutritionist about mixing increased training with a weightloss program.

5. How many challenges are there?Since there are often different groups who get started at different times, there can be as few as 1-2 challenges, and as many as 7-8 going at any given time. If you are interested in joining a challenge, just check out that thread (see #2). If there are <5 challenges, the weekly threads will be stickied at the top of the forum. If there are >5 challenges, they will not be sticked and can be found in the main thread listing for the forum.

just added #5 above. we've had this one other time - 5+ groups going at the same time. fantastic stuff!!!! since there are so many, i will not be stickying the weekly challenge threads (posting them to the top of the forum). for starters, its time consuming, plus they end up blocking out more current questions and topics if there are 5+ stickied threads. thanks for your understanding. if we fall back <5 then i will start stickying them again.

I would like to sign up in the current weigh loss challenge. I don't seem to see where to do that. I have not used a blog before so I am not sure how to use this site either.
Thanks,

I'm a clydsdale and started training for a oly distance tri in October.  Weightloss was not an objective, but a benefit......duh!.  I was diagnosed with hypertention, high blood sugar etc...."Mid-life metabolic syndrome".  At 50, i could resign myself to a life of deteriorating health and pill consumption, or, make a stand and cheat the course of my impending demise.

While my weight has only dropped a bit, I've lost 4" off my waist and I am developing quads close to "Arnaud".

I love the life...my wife loves me for loving the life....and my kids, well, I hope I can show them this old dawg has a few tricks.

Good luck to everyone...doing this for whatever reason

Thanks Autumn.

I need those guidelines.   I have a couple of hundred pounds that stick to me like glue. Weekly accountability is a good one.  It is easy to "slip off the wagon" if what you are doing in under the radar of others.  Thanks to the training log, I can find the foods I eat prettty easily and keep track.  When I see how many extra calories and fats are in certain food choices, it helps me to decide on a healthier alternative.

Hello cyber world-
I live in Wisconsin, so the training months outdoors are short. I am 39 years old and did my first Tri last month. It was a super-sprint. My goal was to finish. mission accomplished. Right after the race, my friend and I were looking forward to next years. This time we know what it takes to improve our times and are totally motivated. we have recruited 2 more friends. My goal is to lose 35 pounds by next year. I will be checking this site frequently for motivation. My wife and 3 kids made a banner for me when I got home from my 1st Tri. It felt great to have them behind me. I know we are not alone.

Ok,  The name should say it all.  I have dabbled in weight loss an tri's before.  I had some success untill I tore my plantar.  Now I seem to be healed up and am ready to give it another shot.  In April I weighed in at 275, My fat rolls were moving it together and forming one giant roll.  I became very distressed at how I was lookin in a full length mirror.  I decided it was my time to make that lifestyle change.  I cut soda out of my diet alltogether and started portioning my food better.  Having been a High School swimmer, I joined the local YWCA and started swimming daily.  Two weeks ago I completed my first tri this tear, a sprint the just about wiped me out on the run.  Currently I am down to 242 lbs.  It is wonderful to have lost so much, but I have been at this weight for over a month.  Why has my weight loss stalled?  I have eaten improperly only a few times. (like on the 4th)  I am wondering if it is from changing my workout.  I cut swimming down to two or three times a week and have begun biking twice a week and running once a week (if i skip one workout though, it will be the run.  I rode 22 miles the other day and swam a mile last night.  How come I can't drop below the 240 palteau?  I'm 6ft tall and have a big frame, but the health group we have where I work tells me my ideal body weight it 179.  Can anyone give me some pointers.

Hi Guys,
I started exercising because my wife said I had to be productive during my unemployment.  I said "sure"  since I now have nothing but time.  So I started walking and swimming.  That was going good and then started to bike to change things up.  Then the wife (a runner) encourages me to take it up a knotch, work the walk to a run and you have a Triathlon.  So here I am.  I have a sprint in my sites for this coming May and I'm working up to it.  Looking forward to training with all of you.

The best"pointer" I can give , that has worked for me was to cut out/greatly reduce sugar and flour products. Yes Pasta, Breads etc... none or very little processed food. If it comes in a wrapper..put it back!!! Once a week I may what I want..couple pieces of pizza or a burger, but my body feels gross if an when I cave in to my previous diet.

This really works well!! Sugar is evil!!!!!!
