Hey everyone LA Triathlon starts on Dec. 4. The LA Tri is going to be my first, possibly second Olympic triathlon. Is anyone planning on doing the race?

I did it this year as my second Oly, but I'll be on vacation for the next one, so no.  Not sure I'd do it again right away anyway, it's a fun race, it's just $$$ and administratively a PITA since it's a point to point.

Bike is relatively flat, 2 or 3 sections I'd call "hills," run is very hilly.  Train those hills!

bike is relatively flat,

Is that code for "uphill all the way"?!?!   That's how it felt to me!!!

I already got an email to register.  I want to do the Olympic version next year since I did the sprint version this year, but I'll be praying to the Gods of Calm Water for sure this time.

IWantToTri is actually in my tri club and we're going to be teaming up to do some training once we get over our respective laziness injuries.

Naw, just how LA Tri Club people psych out San Diego Tri Club people

OK, maybe more than relatively flat, I agree the whole profile is pretty much false flat uphill all the way, but only 2 or 3 sections where it really feels like more of a climb

As you know, if you've done the sprint course you've done 90% of the Oly bike course

WOW, I never thought of it like that before, tris are definetly more mental than physical.

Now that I read what I wrote, I mean it in both the sense that you've done the distance as well as any challenges.  The Oly only adds a little 4 mile out and back section in the middle, a little up and down but no hills to speak of.  Go for it!

I was thinking exactly that the other day ... the bike segment of the LA sprint was 21 miles ... so it wasn't that far off the olympic distance.  I agree that the bike only had 2 or 3 hills - the one towards the end nearly got me ... my bike computer said I'd already done 20 miles so I thought I must have been near the end ... and I'd been told the last 1/4 mile was a big downhill ... but then I went around the corner and faced the toughest climb yet ... it was short but kinda steep, plenty of people were off their bikes walking it.  I knew I had to keep going because it was my first race with clipless pedals and I figured if I slowed enough to need to stop I'd probably topple over and that would be embarrassing.  Yep, it's all mental!!!

Anyway, we know how you LA people are .... you're not going to psych us San Diegans out!!  In fact, next year I'm going to make a point of organizing a BT meetup the day before so we can visit and be friendly!!

I will probably do it. I really like the course. There is lots of room on the road to pass. I ran my first triathlon there and had success. It Would be nice if they bring enough medals to the post race awards this year. (assuming I place again this year)
Make sure to include some good hill training in your bike and run both downhill and uphill. The hilly run segment of this race is challenging.
