Subject: Got meself a HRM - calories accurate?
I finally got over my fear of technology and got a Polar cs300. (My trainer wanted me to measure cadence anyhow, so in my mind this was quite a justifiable expense. )

How accurate are the calories burned on these if you put in your height and weight?

I'm losing weight and my calorie tracking software is significantly under what the HRM is saying. I have a tough time beliving I burn 772 calories doing 5 miles of brisk walk/slow jog intervals. Can that be right?

Are they accurate calorie-wise for weight training, too?

Way off....

I've been comparing my powermeter KJ  which is based on the work I preformed while cylcling that can be convert more accurately to calories to my HRM estimates of calories burned. My HRM overestimates my calories burned cycling by 70-79%...that is way off.

I disagree.

I have checked my Polar F11 against SEVERAL other devices, including my friends Sigma HRM and two different brands of treamills and Ellipticals and my nutritional software and usually theres nothing more then a 10% difference.

Example: I weight 174 lbs, 5'8" 31 year old male. If I run thirty minutes at a 9:31 pace on my easy days, I get a 20-30 calorie swing between my HRM and the treadmill. Same difference of I run tempo.

Honestly, I would check your settings in your HRM and/ or your software.

My Garmin 305 is way off. I'm a 26 year old female, 5'4", 132 pounds, and it says I burned 485 calories running two and a half miles at a roughly 13min/mile pace.

From what I understand, there is no simple device or calculator that can give you an accurate measure of calories burned.  They are all just estimates and can be either close to accurate or off wildly for any individual.

For what it's worth I rode 100 minutes today at ~ 16mph and my HRM said I'd burned 1623 calories. I entered the same information on http://www.healthstatus.com/cgi-bin/calc/calculator.cgiand it estimated 1440 a 12 % difference.

I may be totally wrong here, but what your powermeter is giving you it the actual energy generated by the legs onto the pedals - i would assume your body overall is working more than that !!

that said, i also feel that at times what my HRM tells me must be inflated - my guess is about 20% at best..

My polar (625X) uses an inputted VO2max and HRmax to calculate the calorie expenditure.  This seems fairly accurate, although I have no gold standard to compare it against.  If I let it use the default values the calorie number would be much higher  To estimate my VO2max I use my 5K PR and the Daniel's formula.

I also notice that my calorie results usually seem much lower than what some other people repport in their blogs for a give ride or run distance.

The work done (in kJ) reported by a power meter is the sum force you've applied to move your bike a certain distance. When you integrate this quantity over time, you get power. However, most power meters also track heart rate data as well, so I'm assuming that when the meter reports kJ to the user, it is including the physiological work (as derived by HR) as well as the mechanical work.
