Ran to the CU campus with Barry Siff. Temps were in the single digits. :-) Got to the field house - changed clothes - changed shoes, did my drills and pick ups.

Comments:

Started out easy - it was pretty icy and cold, wanted to make sure I was warm before I put out any effort. Went through 1km at 3:43, mile 1 at 6:03, and 2km at 7:28, then 2 miles - somewhere around 12:30, this included some uphill and turns - then up a little more - hit 4km at 15:15 and 3 miles at 18:46 - finished in 19:26. There were probably 15 people in my wave- and I wasn't going to go too hard, just enough to get a tempo workout in 6:15-6:30 pace. I think I ended up at 6:20. I was in the back at 1km - then I started passing all the young guns who took it out too fast and passed my last two guys at about 4.5km - then just ran tempo in - I could hear on guy coming up on me - but I ran pretty controlled coming in - lots of ice and turns on this course. Last year I ran like 19:5x on a very nice day and clear course. Today was cold and icy - no need to go down in unimportant race. So - good effort nice day.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Ran to Barry's to set up his CT, then home after that. Legs felt great.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

cold/ice

Event comments:

Pancake breakfast after - how can you beat that! And a winter hat too!

  1. Oh my lord, 9F is cold!!
  2. Oh my goodness, a sub-20 5K is fast!!

Well done, Mike -- Glad you had a fast, safe race.  Icy roads would worry me, but thankfully it's still dry here in MA.  Not for long though, not for long...

Great race! I can imagine you would need to run that fast when it's 9 degrees outside just to keep warm!

Thanks everyone. 9F is NOT as cold as 9F in New England - no humidity, so its more like 20 in my mind. Not that bad at all. Looking to do some snow shoeing and maybe skate skiing once we are back in NH, VT, ME in a couple of weeks. Now, that will be cold!
