Subject: Mountain training??
I was thinking of maybe doing some high altittude training in a couple of months. However I live in Illinois so basically that is impossible. I was thinking of maybe going to Colorado for about two weeks to train. The only problem is I don't know where to go. Can anyone help??

The problem right now, is that high altitude and Colorado right now mean "Peak Season" and lodging will be at a premium due to skiing.

I love Breckenridge though

What exactly are your goals from this training? Most of the benefits of living and training at altitude dissipate pretty quickly once you leave.

If you are planning on training at altitude and then going back down just before a race there may be some small, if any, benefit (it won't be much after just two weeks and it might be cancelled out because while you are acclimating you won't be able to train at the same intensity) but probably not very noticable. If you want to get inspired by beautiful scenery and a great tri culture though than Colorado is the right place.

Yea I can see that. I really don't even have to stay at a major lodge or resort. I just want to train. Heck I would sleep on somebodies floor if I had to.

true. I don't have a schedule but I would definitely do it before a race in 2007

There is a hostel in Winter Park/Fraser (alt. 8560 ft)  which is cheap if you don't mind the dorm room set-up: http://www.therockymountaininn.com/lodging_rates_2007.htm

(I've never stayed there, so this isn't really a recommendation)

My suggestion would be to begin training at a lower elevation in southern colorado. Warm sunny days in the 50 and 60s this time of year. I train year round at 6000-7000 ft with little or no problems running 20 - 25 mile weeks. I have ran with people who visited here from the lower elevations. They seem to do ok on the first run or two but then the body needs time to adapt. The higher the altitude the worse the effect.

Stay low and try some places along the front range. No ski areas around so the prices are reasonable. There are some nice 6 - 10 runs in the Garden of Gods.

Also, google skyrunner for extreme high altitude running information.
