Overcast
Total Time = 6h 42m 40s
Overall Rank = 554/600
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 155/
Pre-race routine:

After clock watching for a couple of hours between 2 & 3am finally got up just before 5am, grabbed some breakfast, organised the sunscreen and walked from the motel to the race venue (about 1km).
Event warmup:

The bikes were racked the night before so checked tyres, attached the bento box, drinks bottles, tubes etc. Went for a warm-up swim before the mass start by the whard at 6:30am.
Swim
  • 53m 48s
  • 2000 meters
  • 02m 41s / 100 meters
What would you do differently?:

My swimming has come a long way (literally) since winter, so with another season and winter under my belt would expect the time in the water to start reducing down.
Transition 1
  • 02m
What would you do differently?:

Pretty happy with my transitions, this was going to be slower with putting socks on and the allocated racking position was at the back of the compound meaning a longer run with the bike both in and out of transition (but not run as the run course left from the rear of transition).
Bike
  • 3h 13m 34s
  • 90 kms
  • 27.90 km/hr
Comments:

I still had a niggling pain in the right calf which I had been trying to fix with a number of bike fittings so didn't want to push too hard on the bike incase it caused problems with the run, running off it was fine and had a number of massages prior to the race.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have pushed the bike harder to bring down the overall time but with this being my first Half-Ironman the will to complete was greater than the will to race it.
Transition 2
  • 04m
Comments:

A fairly slow transition, stopped for a pit stop, organised more drink and stretched a bit off the bike.
Run
  • 2h 28m 58s
  • 21 kms
  • 07m 05s  min/km
Comments:

I was very happy with the first lap of 1:03 but seemed to struggle the last 6km's of so. Really enjoyed the run but after about 6hrs 15mins really just wanted to get across the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

The sun came out for the second lap, I had plenty of sunscreen and took on a mixture of fluids and poured water over my head to cool down but would probably use a fuel belt for electrolytes next time and just take on the water at each of the aid stations.
Post race
Warm down:

Took on more fluid and joined the long queue for a massage before heading back for a shower and a trip next door to the Ice-Cream Parlour for the most obscene ice cream in a while.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need more time on the bike, might mix up the road cycling with the mountain biking and join some cycling groups as long rides on your own are really boring.

Event comments:

Overall it was a good race, though found the bike course a little boring. Completed it which was the main thing but a little longer than anticipated.

A 2 lap course the first lap of 1250m and the second and 700m. both were rectangle shaped courses.
Suit: Orca Speedsuit
Course: The first lap went quite well, there was a lot of sunstrike on the retun lap making the navigation interestings. The second lap the wind got up making a lot of chop on the outbound leg. Jellyfish and currents also added a bit of exeitement to the swim but pretty happy with the swim overall.

The bike was a 3 lap course with a long (55km) first lap and two 17.5km laps to follow around the beach by the race venue.
Wind: Cross-winds with gusts
Course: Being by the coast the course was fairly flat and fast but a lot of wind made the ride hard going and they kept switching meaning one minute you were doing 34kph the next down to 24kph. The 2nd and 3rd lap went right through the centre of the Mount and around the town so there were a lot of supporters and holidaymakers around to cheer which was good (This was the last weekend of the Christmas holidays for most people)

That's a fantastic effort man, awesome stuff!!

The Mount looks great in the photo. I'm flying home to NZ for good on Wednesday, these photos just make me really homesick!

Rest up now, take a break, have a few Steinies and chill!

And go to bed, right now you're online, and it's 1.40am in NZ!

Guy, well done, great reading your race report, glad that so many things went right for you, those long course tris are hard work and you should be proud of what you have acheived.  Keep up the training and good luck for your next endeavour.  Phil.

Full credit on your first HIM- yeah I was there and lap 2 in the water was tough.

The run is a lot harder than you made out to - it was real hot and the Mount is definately tough so well done.

Taupo now is it????????

Good luck
