Why do I sometimes feel bloated after a swim. IE- 1400+ meters.

Am I taking in air into the stomach during my breathing? Maybe when I consume a little water?

hmmm... interesting... does it happen everytime? I wonder if it has something to do with what you're eating that day or near your swim time??

It's been happening often lately. Maybe the last 6 swim sessions. But prior to that, never. I have altered some breathing styles so I associated it with that.

I even changed the breakfast to eliminate the possibilty of food. I typically have my coffee and a bowl a Raisin Bran.

So who knows. I feel bloated for about an hour then it goes away.....

Same thing happens to me. I think it has to do with not expelling all my air when I exhale underwater before taking another breath?

I'm pretty sure mine is a combination of gulping air rather than smoothly inhaling, and swallowing water from every once in awhile. I burp a lot when I swim, sometimes underwater, but not always!

I wondered about this too, because I get gas cramps from it, and I know I'm going to be the guy farting chlorine gas the whole bike leg...

Good thing there is no drafting...

I have the same problem. I gulp air when I swim and don't fully exhale when my face is in the water. The result is a stomach full of air and cramps to go with it when I'm finished.

If I concentrate on fully exhaling while my face is in the water and only take a small bit of air when I turn to breathe, I don't have the problem... but that's not 'natural' for me yet, so it takes a bit of effort.

I have the same problem.  Bloating and.....gas.  It totally sucks.  Although passing gas while swimming gets trapped in my suit and helps keep my legs up!!

Plus you can tell if you're rolling like you should, since the, um, air stays upright...

It's due to poor breathing. You're getting a mix of air and water into your gut. The chlorine in a pool doesn't help any.

I had the same problem when I first started swimming. Short term take something like Gas-Ex after a swim. It works great. The long term fix is to improve your breathing technique.

After 3 years of having a similar problem which becomes quite painful when you're on the bike for a while after the swim, I've found a solution that works for me.  The bloating/gas feeling is because we take in some air and some water when we're swimming.  I've found that if I take 3-4 Tums or chewable antacid tablets about 20 minutes before I swim it allows me to burp any air after I come out of the water instead of keeping the gas in my stomach.  Hope this helps your situation.

Why and how did you change your breathing style?

I had this exact problem and figured out that I was drinking too much pool water.

So I think I have a combination of stomach bloating and the stomach flu. I have been throwing up all day and it feels like bubbles of air are in my stomach. Any recommendations to what I should do.

I have the same problem every time I swim. If I try to run right after a swim the cramping gets so bad I rarely can make a mile. It's a total pain since I have to always have my swim be the last workout, or the only workout, of the day. I've tried taking tums prior to a swim and it helps a little but not enough to go running.

I'm a fast biker, aka "slow swimmer" so I'm prob the last person who should offer advice. That said, when I started swimming, I had the same problem. Like others say, I suspect your gulping air vs breathing it in.
