I am absolutely not a morning person either. I work out at the Y and they are open weeknights till 11 pm, so I usually get my work-outs in past 9pm. I tried the morning thing and I ended up not working out at all and really resented it when I did make it. If the Y is closed, I can still get a run in outside with my reflectors and flashlight. The race morning thing though doesn't bother me. I am usually very pumped up and I do fine and then I nap when I get home.

I like working out in the morning because I feel good for the rest of the day, but I like the afternoon luxury of being able to extend workouts if I feel like it...plus, the pool opens at 6 and I have to be at work by 7...that's not much time for a good swim!

I adjust to morning races ok, but I do have some issues with nutrition when I switch up the schedule. My body seems to fight between hypoglycemia when I don't eat and stomach issues when I eat too close to a workout or race. That's probably the main thing I'd be able to nail down better with morning workouts.

firstnet911 - 2007-01-28 2:34 PM Just set your watch ahead the night before the race and don's ask anyone else what time it is. You'll be ready to go at 9:00, and everyone else will be ready at 7:00.

Or you could enter races that are a couple of time zones behind you.  It might say 8am on the clock, but it'll feel like 10!

I am totally not a morning person. Luckily I start work at 3 pm so I can do my workouts at 11 am and it works for me.

As for the days of the tris...I just have to suck it up..I hate it.

We have a local tri that has its start time dictated by the high tide. The first year I did it it started at 11 am...Yay!  Everyone else complained about the late start. This past year it was at 8 am...blah

Wow! I'm glad I'm not the only one! I usually work from 12-8pm and would rather workout at 8pm than 8 or 9am! Some mornings I can get out of bed, but I love my sleep!

I work 12 hr nights 7pm-7am. I sometimes have train in the afternoons b/w work days. As for race day you could imagine how difficult it would be to start a race at 7am when I am use to going to bed at 8am. So 2 nights b/f the race I only get about 5 hrs of sleep, so the night before the race I am feeling real tired early. I also have to take 2 benadryls to help give me a good sleep b/f race morning. Benadryl doesnt give you that drowsy feeling in the morning. I usually wake up refreshed, on time, and ready to go. However, a nap usually comes after the race.

I am SOOOOOOOOOOO not a morning person!

But...if I don't get at least one workout in before work, one of two things happens.  Either I miss my workouts completely because that time I "thought I had" disappears for one reason or another, OR...I do have time but I don't get home until WAY late and miss another morning workout because of it.

I really started getting up early when I lived in TX.  I had to learn to get up horribly early on weekends because if you didn't start your run or ride at 6 when it was ony 90 degrees, it was going to be even worse than that later in the day.

I was MUCH better at getting up early when I knew someone else was meeting me at the gym.  I didn't want to be the one that didn't show up or showed up late...so I got my butt moving.  No one meets me anymore...I should find a friend!  My body takes to swimming in the mornings better than anything else.  Not sure why...but that is the only early w/o I can usually handle.

As for races...the nerves/adrenaline get me out of bed. Still hurts, but I'm too antsy to sleep.

I dunno...there is just something nice about having all or half your workouts done BEFORE you get to work.  I would be in bed sleeping right now so I could get up early to swim...if I could sleep...dammit.   Tomorrow will be a LONG day!

I AM a morning person, but I can't workout then. As a married person whose husband found the joys of triathlons first, he gets first pick. That means he gets the mornings to work and/or workout while I get the kids ready and off to school. My workouts vary between mid morning and after work. I get Friday mornings, so I do a bike ride early that day, but the rest are later. I find my best strategy has been to just make a "date" for the workout. Then just do it. As much as possible. I allow life to intervene (sick kids, stuff like that) because that just happens. But I do my best not to let work interfere, because work will always be there so I have to learn to schedule around it.

I hate mornings too. But, I do my swimming in the morning before work. It's the least offensive of the 3 in the morning. I get up at 5:15 and am at the pool by 6- can get a one hour workout in. I bribe myself to get out of bed that early with thoughts of sleeping until 7 the rest of the week. (I swim Tues and Thurs). Don't have the luxury of getting workouts in at lunch, so it's after work for the rest of them.

When summer gets here, I'll have to get up super early on the weekends to get my long run and bikes in before it gets too hot. But it's worth it to avoid the 90-100 degree weather. I just promise myself a nap in the afternoon....

I hate it, but I have to ask myself how bad do I want to be a triathlete. Usually that gets me out of bed.

Good luck

PS- I don't do coffee either. BUT I LOVE ME SOME DIET COKE!

Im not really amornng person cause of my work schedule but my gym isnt open when I get off at 11 pm so I usually get to the gym around 1030-11 for an hour or 2. I like getting to the gym before I go to work at 3pm. I feel more awake and have more energy to get through the night.

VCSharpin - 2007-01-28 3:09 PM I do most of my training at night also. I tried doing it in the morning and didn't mind it, but it was hard to be consistent with it. I do find that race day doesn't bother me because I'm so excited.

Ditto.

I am not a morning person.  To me, an early morning workout occurs at 7:30.  I do most of my training at night or in late afternoon.  I'm lucky enough to have a fairly flexible schedule, so I can come into the lab early, leave at 4 to go run, and then do some work at night.  Once it starts staying light longer, I won't have to do that.  I also get workouts in over lunch when I'm not too busy.

I'm a night owl by nature, but have to train in the morning for necessity.  With 2 kids at home, I refuse to take away from their time after work, so I work out in the mornings before work.  I've found this actually have a lot of benefits:

  1. I usually go to bed earilier and sleep better.
  2. I have more energy throught the rest of the day.
  3. I'm "sharper" right off the bat at work instead of taking a few hours to get in a groove.
  4. My workouts are easier - I'm not running late from anything where I have to compromise giving up a routine.

4:15 is not the wee hours - that is the time between night and day that only the evil and undead walk the earth...and donut makers. ...

Been there, done that. It's part of why I'm in a second career now. So, getting up at 6 am is sleeping in for me. I still have to get up at 6 on some weekdays now, and if I don't have to then I get up anyway and have time for a workout. I have occasionally pushed the alarm to 5 am for training but I'm trying to limit those lapses of common sense.

I am NOT a morning person. Heck, even my boss knows better than to schedule important meetings before 10am if she wants me functional. I work out during the week at lunch and after work. In the summer and fall, I was very likely to get up and run in the morning before it got hot ... but now that it's winter, I find myself waiting (mostly hoping) for the outside temps to warm up.

Race day hasn't been a problem. I've only done relays in the last year, so we traveled in a pack ... no morning people involved ... and found ourselves bumping into each other in the motel room mumbling "We do this WHY?". Once you get to the race site, the adrenalin will get you through the rest ... but let me tell you ... that nap after a nice warm shower is the BOMB!

Oh yeah ... and diet coke is its own food group. And some of the Clif Shot Bloks have caffeine in case you need to replenish during the race and the carbonation doesn't appeal to you!
