Pre-race routine:

Just the usual... get up, get dressed, drive there, check-in, bathroom, look for friends, drink something, bathroom again, wait at start.
Event warmup:

None really. We just walked around.
Run
  • 1h 10m 18s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt really strong. There's a little part of me that thinks I could have gone just a touch faster, but I wasn't sure about whether I could hold it for the whole race and was a bit worried about blowing up. The first mile was strong and way too fast and I had to reign myself in around the Mile 1 marker. I kept trying to go a bit faster, but then I'd start to feel like I was pushing too hard, so I had to hold back so I had enough energy to get to the finish.

I finished pretty strong. I took the first loop on the track pretty slowly because I wasn't sure how long it was, but the second loop I gave it everything I had left. I must have done it correctly since I felt like throwing up in the finish chute. :)
What would you do differently?:

Feel more confident about being able to hold a hard pace for the entire race.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around and catch my breath.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My own fear about being able to run this distance at a "race pace."

Event comments:

I like this race. A lot.

Performance: Good
Only Mile 1 and 2 were marked, and it was looped weirdly, so it wasn't two miles between Mile 2 and the Mile 1 marker again, so it was hard to get good mile splits. Watch data: Lap 1: 10:09 - 158 avg HR (wow! Fast mile!) Lap 2: 11:24 - 174 avg HR (not bad, since that includes nearly 30 seconds of "rest" at the drink station) Lap 3: 19:24 - 178 (this was the long part between the Mile 2 marker, around to the start/finish again, and then back to the Mile 1 marker... probably was close to 1.6 miles) Lap 4: 11:46 - 178 (same distance as Lap 2 - slowing down a little, but not much) Lap 5: 17:35 - 183 (this is from the Mile 2 marker to the finish, including two laps on the track)
Course: Flat run through the neighborhood around the school, two laps, followed by two loops along the cinder track at the park.

Oh, and I should mention that I SET A PR at this race, and met one of my goals for 2007 (sub-12 min/mile 10k)!!

I met my three goals for the race:

1) not be last -- there were a decent number of people behind me, even someone else in my age group!
2) beat 1:14:00 (12 min/mile pace)
3) beat my time from two years ago (1:12:00)

I did all three!  Woo hoo hoo!

Way to go on your PR and all your goals!  Great job.  I wish I would have know about the race as I live in Pleasant Hill.  Where the heck have I been?  Anyway, super duper race.

Very cool -- congrats on raising the bar, and sure, why not try just a touch faster next time.... it seems like you're primed to keep improving!

Cheers, -Sunny
