Subject: Swim question - one arm drills vs regular swimming

One of the drills I did this morning was the one arm drill ... (swim 25m using only my left arm, then 25m using on my right arm). I counted the strokes I needed to finish one 25m lap ... using only my right arm it was 16 and using only my left arm it was 17. The confusing part is that when I swim normally using both arms, my stroke count is 21-22 per length. Any ideas why I'm less efficient using both arms?

Personally, when I'm doing one arm drills I kick like crazy. It's almost like working on the kickboard. Maybe that is helping propel you.

I notice the same thing and it was a little startling. What would be more telling, though, is your shop golf score. In otherwords, even though you're doing fewer strokes, your also going a LOT slower doing 1 arm drills.

bet you're kicking a ton to get some forward movement.  I know I do on one-arm drills.

When I do one arm swimming, I was told to rotate like normal by my swim coach...so really your 16 and 17 compare to 32 and 34 not stand alone 16 & 17...so you are less efficient.

I try to do one arm swimming with my non-swimming arm by my thigh each workout...do it one way breathing one side, switch arms breathing same tide coming back, then back again with 2nd arm and then back again with 1st arm..always breathing same side. It makes you rotate towards your swimming arm and also away from your swimming arm which is harder

For me a crappy bilateral breather it is the #1 drill that helps me balance and breath better on my weaker side.
