Subject: Town Lake/Cap 2k/CapTex Questions

I'm thinking about going to Austin in early May to swim the Cap2k, to get familiar with the entire CapTex triathlon course before the race, and to visit all those great things you have but we don't -- REI, nice Japanese restaurants, and now, unfortunately for me, IKEA....

http://www.cap2k.com/

They describe the Cap2k swim as "downhill", suggesting that there is a bit of a current.  It starts from Red Bud Isle and ends at the Texas Rowing Center.

My questions:

1) Is there really a noticable current?

2) If there is a current, is this something that affects the swim on the CapTex area of the lake?

I'm not from Austin, but I did the CapTex Oly last year. Personally, I didn't notice any current, but I get their "downhill" description. Townlake is so narrow that it felt more like a river to me. Most of the swim could be viewed as "downstream", while the "upstream" portion is fairly protected from current. Regardless, it's a great event.

Town Lake is just a damned up portion of the Lower Colorado River. Water does move from west to east, but the effective current is pretty neglible.

No noticable current, just debris.

I'm also doing the CapTex and I was wondering if I needed a wetsuit? This will be my second tri ever, still learning.

I would recommend a wetsuit for any race Olympic distance or longer.  The time you save in the water with a suit outweighs the time it takes in transition to the bike.  Besides, the water in Town Lake at that time of year is usually chilly!

I'd say yes to the wetsuit. If you are renting one then you should call early to reserve one. Jack and Adam's as well as Austin TriCyclist rent them out for the race.

Thanks for the advice. How much does it cost to rent one?

I'm not positive but I think it's around $30.
