Can anyone tell me how far the race location is from South Beach? My plan is to make a vacation out of the trip and stay in South Beach, but I'm not sure if I should also book a hotel for the night before the race somewhere near the start line.

I made this mistake last year...or should I say my other half did.  He booked a hotel in SoBe (which mind you really wasn't SOUTH beach, it was at the northern end of SoBe) and it took us almost 45 minutes to get to the race site from there.  Even if you stay in the heart of SoBe you should still expect more than a half hour drive to the site.  The race site is at the Southern end of Miami, and it's inland a few miles so you're gonna wanna stay nearer the race site even if it's only that one night pre-race.  You'll definitely have a much less stressful drive on race morning.  I speak from personal experience here.

I agree w/ Q. Get a hotel close to the race site. There are tons of hotels within about 10 minutes of the race site. I called the Larry and Penny Thompson state park and they gave me recommendations for some hotels nearby.

Yeah I stayed in downtown Miami last year and it was roughly 20-30 minute drive from there and South Beach is a little further away from what I remember.

It was an awesome race though, I'm doing it again this year. Time to start beefing up the training = )

There are 3 of us in my immediate training group that will be heading down to Miami for this race. In my extended training group of people that I train with occassionally, there are approximately 25 people that are signed up for Miami Man, all from the Tampa area. We will be taking over Miami that weekend!

Awesome!  Well we'll have to make sure we have a great BT and friends gathering that weekend so we know we can all cheer for out on the course.  It's such a great spirit lifter to see your friends out there!

Not sure, but the last email I saw said there were less than 250 slots left. If I had to guess I would say it will still be at least another month, maybe 2, before registration is closed.

Last year they sent out continuous reminders and let you know how many slots were available right up until they cut off registration.

Just a little heads-up about race slots.  The slots in this race are not for each individual race.  There are 1200 slots for ALL the races combined.  So when they say 250 left, it means that if 250 people register for the Oly, then the HIM is closed too.  Just a point to consider when thinking of the probablities.

Also, something I should mention if you cant' get into any of those, or just for general info when you go somewhere and there's one of these around...

All USAT members get a discount at Choice Hotels (Comfort Inn, Clarion, Sleep Inn, etc.)...when you book, give them the discount code for USA Triathlon, and they give you a better rate.  I got a room in Sarasota last year in May before my first Oly and it was 42 bux a night.  Just an FYI in case you guys don't know about the discount.  I don't have the card with the code on it with me today, but if anyone needs to know, PM me and I'll look when I get home.

I don't know if I'll sign up for this again since my training has taken a back seat lately.  But whenever they send out those notices that say "Only 100 spots left" they make me want to do it!  Then with another BT party that weekend...hmmmm

It's still 6 months away. You've got plenty of time to get back into gear and still be ready for the race in November = )

Nice!! I just did the FL 70.3 today. Only my 2nd 1/2 Ironman race besides Miami last year. I improved my time from Miami by a little over 10 minutes and this race had some hills while Miami was flat, so I was stoked.

Have you done Miami before. If not, you're in for a treat it's a lot of fun...

Congrats on your 70.3 finish!!  Way to go!! I was out there with Jess (Tri Take Me Away)...you saw us if you saw the sign that said "PUT ME IN YOUR RACE REPORT" or the other side that said "YOU WANNA?".

Glad you had a good race, it's so much fun!  I'm gonna do the FL 70.3 next year as a warmup for Coeur d'Alene.  I can't wait to get out on that course.  I did Miami Man last year, and it was lots of fun.  I'm looking for a huge improvement on my 6:02 from last year.  Planning to go 5:30 this year.

Hope we get a good group of BTers down at Miami this year.  Should be alot of fun!!!

Yes, the FL 70.3 was a very fun race. Only negative is the run is a shoe-ruiner. Turned black from the dirt/sand. I'll do it again next year if I'm still in Florida at that time.

Wow, that's an ambitious plan to knock off 30 minutes from your time last year. I did 6:23 last year myself and 6:13 for FL 70.3. My goal for Miami this year will be a sub 6 hr. performance, anything else on top of that will be gravy.

Can't believe Miami is still over 5 months away. Not really sure what my race schedule will consist of between now and then. I need to have races in my line-up to stay motivated. Think I'll start a thread asking what races people recommend ( other than the Disney Olympic, did that one twice already.)

Just registered for the international. Looking forward to meeting you all at the race. According to the web site they say there is only a "Few" spots left so if you haven't registered yet now is the time!

Ugh - I'm not good at committing this far out.  It's such an expensive race I hate to sign up and then not be able to do it.

I'll be there in some capacity ... not racing, either at the Run water station or on the back of a motorcycle.  Can a scorpion bite you on a motorcycle?  Surprised
