Ok, one of our forum members has talked me into doing an Olympic TRI in a few weeks. I have not done a TRI yet nor do I know if I can run swim 1600yds or run 6 miles but I think I am willing to try. I have a good cycling and swimming base and can walk the run if necessary. I really think I can do this.

Am I nuts?????????

Well, we're all a little nuts.

That being said.... yes, I think you can do it! Your time might not be as impressive as you may want, or as impressive as it could be if you had longer to train, but I definitely think it can be DONE.

So get out there and do it! Which one are you planning to do? It might be pretty darn cold in a couple of weeks, though......

Yes. Welcome to the asylum.

If you can't run the full six miles, then walking is an option. Do you have a similar alternative for the swim (breast-, side-, back-stroke, dog paddle, floating, Evinrude)?

Ok, I'm nuts. Guess I have to live with that!!! The wife said it is what makes me so lovable.

I have a full arsenal of swim techniques available to me from my high school swimming days plus I still have a "floaty" stomach that I am working on losing.

My goal is not to puke...much.

How should I approach trianing for this? I am doing a Sprint program from TRI Newbies right now. Should I ditch it for awhile and start doing the race distances or close to it??

Thanks,

Jeff

How many weeks do you have? I'm doing my first tri (olympic) in less than 3 weeks. I have not been training long for it. I ran 7 miles Sunday...longest run I've ever done.

My advice (and I have some experience with little time to train for a first and olympic tri - see article "uphil" on front page) is to start doing bricks - combining workouts and increasing you workout lengths to get accustomed to longer than the normal hour, hour and a half workouts....

(and read the article on the front and see some of the dificulties I had)

Odogg, I have almost 3 weeks until my TRI. I think I am going to up my distances 10-15% across the board and start doing bricks like TM had mentioned.

TM, That was an inspiring story and the good news is they said the water would be something like 72Deg. Woohoo!!!

I'm pumped but I have to start planning all of this!!!!

And don't forget to taper!!!!  Even though you are trying to cram, the taper is just as important as the work you are doing.  You need those muscles to be fresh!!!!
