Wow. That's terrible.

I was wondering if that ever happens during a race. So sad.

I know we are racing, but it still should be fun, not a disaster.

Obviously if you see someone in trouble, it's a good thing to wave for help for them.

Four kids...that's so terrible. It doesn't say anything about how old they are, but she wasn't very old. That is tragic. And a bit scary.

wow, that's sad. with a broken nose, it's likely she was kicked in the face (by a breaststroker?) and passed out.

I hope her children do not grow up to resent fitness pursuits...

I did the "Ride for Heroes" in Aledo a couple of months ago and a guy on the ride suffered a heart attack and died later that day. It was very scary coming up on him as he was lying flat on his back and not breathing, but I think the important thing to remember is that Life is precious and to enjoy each minute of it. Any of us could be killed doing an unlimited array of things including driving in our car, flying on an airplane or a freak accident as happened with this woman at the St. Anthony's tri. I just hope that people don't freak out and start putting warnings out about participating in triathlons. My thoughts and prayers are certainly with this woman's family.

okay, i haven't done my first tri yet, but tell me i can swim the last row and avoid this.  i have no desire to be kicked in the face and i don't really care about my time... please tell me i can avoid getting beat up during the swim

EDIT: wasn't fast enough...this is for pigfinn's post above...

Yes, if you learn to sight and be aware of who's around you. Swim with "wide arms" to create space to your right & left. It's catching up to a breaststroker that is the big problem as you are going faster than they are and they don't know you are there. You have to deviate before you are on top of them to avoid gettingg hit. If you are slower than everyone, no problem!

so it is possible to try to hug either side of the wave?, that's what I would probably do, if possible.  I would probably bag the entire race if I was getting kicked all over... I would bag it and walk out of the water

That's terrible, as if I needed any other reasons to be freaked out by OWS.  At my first triathlon, a guy came out of the water and collapsed, died on the spot.  You don't hear of this thing happening too often, but it breaks my heart everytime.

I feel terribly for her family, especially those children.

Of course. Most of my tris I start wide and in the back and end up passing people. My spring tri last year, a local 1000yd in a lake was 1 wk after I swam alcatrax & was feeling pretty confident. I started in the front of my wave and didn't get passed by too many women...but it was a small wave anyway.

It is totally smart, especially in your first tri or if you are not a strong swimmer to hold back a little or go off to the side.......there is no sense in placing yourself in the middle of a bunch of really fast swimmers and then get ran over. I am definately a fan of smaller wave starts in triathlons with big numbers.

It's hard to say what happened with this lady, very tragic. I think there are good lessons...always be aware of what's going on around you whether swimming, biking or running.....and being respectful and safe should always be more important then being a few mintues faster. It's easy to get up in things when you are in a middle of a race....but it's not always in our best interest or those around us.

It's a freak accident...don't let it deter you during your swim and don't feel you need to do things to avoid it. Just swim, and you'll be safe .

That's truly tragic...I feel so bad for her children and husband.

I read about it in the paper on way home from St. A's.

Very tragic and she was there and had raised money for TnT so she was doing a great thing.

Good reason to give our kids and spouses an extra hug today.
