I did Niantic last year and probably will again this year. The bike route is about as flat as your going to find for a route of that distance in Connecticut - mostly flat with a couple of rollers. The run is dead flat.

Make sure you get in some open water swims. It was a little choppy last year, but not too bad.

Maybe the hardest part is going from the swim to the bike, as there is a little bit of a run up a hill. Also, make sure that your bike is in the small ring because you head out on a slight uphill grade. My husband watched from the transition area and said there were a lot of people falling over trying to clip in.

Best of luck in your training!

Yeah - I am tossing up on doing Niantic or the Greenwich Tri, both on the same day. Greenwhich a lot closer to home (Wilton) but I have heard good things about the Niantic race.

Did the Greenwich Duathlon yesterday so now I am definitely being swayed towards the Niantic race as course was Ok for Greenwich but organisation not the greatest...

Niantic Bay is HMF, which means that organization and goodies will be spot-on. The course is nice, although the run was definitely short when I did it.

They are very pricey, though.

Thanks for your comments- i come from a running backround-mostly 5ks and 1/2 marathons but completed one marathon in 2005 ---not a fast runner by any means 9-10minute mile--bike for fun but the swimming i have't done in awhile--- i have been training at the ymca pool and have taken a few private lessons- plan to try the open water when the weather warms up the swim will be my biggest challenge--- from what i have read my best bet is to stay in the back--- the transition periods will be an adventure- my goal is to finish the race upright and smiling!!!! i am 48 years old and began running at age 40 - never been athletic but in the last 5 years have become active and at times compulsive about exercise----
