I just spotted this today....

http://www.lancewatson.com/VancouverInternational.htm

MEDIA RELEASE: Vancouver International Half-Iron Triathlon Announced for this September. Registration starts May 11th.

May 2, 2007: LifeSport Coaching announced today that Vancouver, Canada will host the third stop on the new Subaru West Coast Triathlon Series. The Subaru Vancouver International Half-Iron will take place on September 16th, 2007 and will be staged in the magnificent setting of the Spanish Banks Beaches with views of the downtown Vancouver skyline and the picturesque North Shore Mountains. Peter Ladner, Vancouver City Councillor and Honorary Chairman of the Event, stated "This will be the only half-ironman triathlon in Canada held in an urban setting and a key event in helping Vancouver achieve its goal of being 20% more active by the 2010 Olympic Games."

The event will feature local and international elite athletes as well as amateur participants from across North America. Jasper Blake, 2006 Ironman Canada Champion, said "The timing of this event is perfect as it will provide an opportunity for many athletes in North America to cap off their season with a great race. It will also be an excellent preparation race for the athletes competing in the Hawaii Ironman in October."

It was also announced today that Subaru Canada has signed on as the title sponsor of the Series that also includes stops in Victoria and Sooke on Vancouver Island.

Registration will open for the Vancouver Event on May 11th, 2007 at www.LifeSport.ca and will be limited to 750 participants.

Yeah, it looks like a pretty sweet little series of races, I am doing the one in Victoria, I will let you all know how it goes. If all goes well I might do Van as well.

Cheers.

Saw it a few days ago....I'm not sure if I'll do the half or not, maybe just the sprint - or possibly the relay. Hopefully they don't make it a short course with a lot of loops, that would suck because it's such a nice area to ride/run.

Kind of a random tangent, but my co-op coordinator JUST emailed me a job for this race series. They (Lifesport fitness) are looking for a special events coordinator for the whole Subaru West Coast Triathlon series. I can forward the posting if anyone is interested in it? Now I'm kicking myself for accepting another job! Well not really...my job rocks so far

Just to update on this, the race was pretty good. Very well organised, lots of volunteers, all in all I would rate the Victoria race an 8-10. If anyone had any doubts about the quality for the Vancouver race, it should be very well run if the Victoria one was anything to go by.

Cheers.

Just heard from a friend that they either dropped the fees a bit or kept them down for longer because not many people are entering.....haven't checked yet myself, but cheaper is always better!!

Anyone know what the water will be like?  Temperature?  Clear/cloudy?  Waves?  Current?  I've never done an ocean swim...  Sounds like a fun race, though.

I just rubbed my Magic Eight Ball for a weather report for the race day - It said "Ask Again Later"!?!?!  The water is cool at first but gets refreshing after the first 500m's or so.  I've been swiming at Jerricho Beach just down a bit and it is not bad at all.  The current shouldn't be too bad since it is a protected by the point. "according to my Coast Guard Buddy...but he lies like a dog most days.  Low waves as well unless there is large boat traffic that day, but not many ships are moving on Sundays...that race is sunday right?

Holy Crap!  I just signed up.  They said it will be a non-issue if the city workers are still on strike...in case anyone was wondering.  Also there are about 200 =/- signed up.  Stay away, I want to win my AG for once.

I'm hitting up the Sprint, as I held myself back from entering the HIM. I know that physically I could do it, but I want my first one to be super special, so I'm waiting until next season where I am ACTUALLY prepared for it.

So I'm in for the sprint, but I'm sick right now and can't train I'm feeling a ton better but I will take today off to be sure.

I gotta get running for my Half-marathon on the 23rd!!!

I'm super excited about doing my first Half Marathon, and I think it should go pretty well!

Hmmm, haven't heard of that one. Will have to look it up. Good luck!

*Just looked it up, sounds pretty good. I do my long runs along part of the route and it's pretty nice - gravel trail, nice scenery and flat. Hopefully there are not too many people though, could make it tough at a few points.

I've been thinking about signing up for the sprint as 5km is probably the max I can run without any training, but it's my SO 30th birthday, so this might not be a go.

Good luck to all who is doing it and I hope to see you there.

Not being familiar with this part of Vancouver, what is the bike course like? Flat, rolling hills, steep climbs, etc? I'm hoping to ride a loop of the course on Saturday morning, but it would be nice to know what I've gotten myself into.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the race. If you see a tall skinny guy with a blue Yaqui, be sure to say hi.

If you want I can get with you on Sat. AM to do a loop of the route.  There is one big steep hill and a couple of hidden long low angle climbs that just kill you (me anyway) e-mail me back if you want, i was planning on going Fri of Sat.

I just rode the bike course yesterday (+ a few extra km).
I ride around here a lot so I'm familiar with the difficulty of the course. The hill from SPanish banks up to Northwest Marine is pretty crazy and will definitely take a lot out of you.

Enjoy the ride if you guys end up going out!

Thanks for the info. Chris, I sent you an e-mail regarding pre-riding the course.

I'm looking forward to it.
