dmwoods59 - 2007-05-30 8:44 PM I'm in. It is 800M OWS without wetsuit right?
Yep. No wetsuit.

From my limited experience Jack is a strange bird! I like him though. He lays things out in black and white. Definitely no grey areas.

Why is he so against wetsuits.  Is it the advantage you get by wearing them?  I don't know how cold the water will be in June, but I would think if it is below the 78 degs he should allow them since with USAT rules you can wear them.  Techincally can't you wear one up to 84 degrees you just don't place in your age group?  I would think this is a safety issue for some people and he would allow them for that reason.  But it is his race and he makes the rules.  I only want to wear mine since I just bought it and need to justify the cost.

Well, I can't imagine how the water will be up to 78+ degrees in the next 10 days. With all the rain and cold mornings... that water is going to be freaking freezing.

This gal hates cold water. If the water is too cold, I might bow out. I can't swim in 70 degree water without a wetsuit.

I would think this is a safety issue for some people and he would allow them for that reason.

1. They're a pain in the a$$ in transition.  They take up valuable room, people toss them and they land on other people's stuff, you need more volunteers if you're going to have strippers, if you don't have strippers people will sit down to take them off and get in other people's way not to mention the complaints if you don't have strippers.

Every OWS race Jack puts on could be wetsuit legal.  It's just easier if they're not.

2. A race director can make a request to USAT for an exception or addition to any USAT rule.  Wearing a wetsuit at one of Jack's races is an instant DQ and you'll be pulled from the course.

3. If someone can't finish the swim distance without a wetsuit, they shouldn't be doing the race.

Thanks, kind of what I figured and that does make sense.  Like you said it's his race and his rules so we have to abide.  I guess if you don't like it noone makes you race.  I swam at Grapevine Lake yesterday and it was chilly at first but warmed up pretty quickly.  You are correct that you should be able to safely swim the distance but I am sure there are people who like the bouyance to where they can float on their back for a minute to take a break with little or no energy.  I guess those people just have to find a wet suit legal race or just hang onto a kayak.

Oh, I can swim the distance. I just might be a frozen swimmer at the bottom of the lake half way through

My wife is considering coming to the race with me.

What kind of festivities are there after the race?

This is only my 2nd Tri, and had to leave asap from the first one (PlayTri)

So don't know what to expect as far as things to do post race.

Usually not a whole lot at any race I have ever done. Just a lot of talking/meeting people.  They should have some post race food and then awards.  Some races even have Beer but I don't know about this one.

Jeep can probably give the best answer here... but at Jack's races.. it's pretty basic. Maybe some bagels, awards... and some chatting with other athletes.

I personally like the scaled down approach. Jack's races are very reasonably priced... I'm sure savings are passed along to us when there isn't a whole lot of fan fare at the end of a race.

Water temp at 71-77 degrees as of May 31.  Shouldn't be too cold for the temperature-sensitive.

Watch?  Why not volunteer?  I did that before my first race and it helped immensely.  Try to see if you can work the transition so you can see the most.  I worked on the bike course and body marking and that even helped.
