Anyone doing the Ironhead race on June 10th?  I am using it as a practice race for the olympic in June.  Hopefully I fair better in the swim than I did last weekend at the swim clinic I attended.  Thought I would drown the first 1/2 mile (w/ wetsuit on).  Second 1/2 mile was much better though.  Hopefully I can get one more practice swim before the race.

I haven't decided yet.  I'll be in Ft. Worth the weekend before for family party so I might not make it back.

Well, it's a tentative on my calendar. I want to do it, to get a race in June... but it's 2 weeks after my Oly.

I have had a offer to do a relay team... the swim portion... which sounds fun... but I don't know if I want to give up a training day to it. Well, I would basically go swim and cheer on my team, then head to WRL for a brick.

Hhhhuuummmm... maybe I should just do the race then?

Gawd I hate waking up early though.

Decisions. Decisions.

I'm tempted to do a sprint sometime in June or July just to judge where I am in my training. The run is the only thing that really scares me. I really don't see myself being able to run 3.1 miles anytime in the next four weeks.

2nd Tri, hope to have a better OWS this time, my first Tri was the PlayTri Sprint and the OWS was not fun.

I signed up yesterday. I plan on doing the fit2train open water swim the weekend before at Lake Ray Hubbard. It's a lot of money to swim in a lake I live next to, but after my swim at Las Colinas I would like to try again before the race. I will eat 15 fewer GUs in my life to pay for it.

I've been considering for awhile.  Just need to get my act together and register.  You'll most likely see me there.

Coach H.  I am confused, is this a question to me?  Not really sure what you are asking.  Please clarify.  Thanks.

Let me take a shot.

I think he has done a tri with a 300 yard pool swim. And he's wondering if he can go from that to a 800 yard OWS.

Well CoachH, how is your swimming? Are you swimming on a regular basis? Do you think you can go the distance? Have you done any OWSing? A lot of people have issues with an OWS. Then again, some people jump right in and feel great.

Really, only you know what you will be ready to do... but I would strongly suggest SOME OWSing before the day of the race.

That was my thought also, but in his logs he did a 1800 meters swim so I was not sure.   I agree I would try the swim first.  I have swum over 2 miles in a pool.  Tried open water a few weeks ago and thought I was going to die (and I was wearing a wetsuit).  First 800m was horrible, 2nd 800m not so bad, but there was less people to deal with.  I guess once the group thins out it is not so bad.

You did better than I did... by checking the logs! HA!

Yea, I'm lost then.

Sorry about that...it was a question for everyone.  I was asking if it was possible to be able to go from  a 300 yard swim to 800 m OWS?

Also...the majority of my swims are broken down to 500yds.  I would say that I am comfortably swimming 35-40min.   After that, it gets interesting.

I would say it is definately doable but I would try and get out to a lake b4 first race.  I went to an organized swim and paniced.

It's doable.  My first and second ever tris were 800m OWS.  I sucked at them both, miserably, but got hooked and am now in my second real season of tris.  If you can swim distances already (I couldn't really), then you'll be fine. But, like the others have said, get in a lake or pond and feel the difference.  You can't see in front of you, much less down to the bottom of anything.  There are "things" in the water and the tri start is wild.  I usually head for the outside and stay clear of people.  Yeah, I'm slow, but so what.

I offically signed up yesterday.  Missed the discounted rate by one day.

For anyone who is interested I am planning on swimming next week probably wednesday at Grapevine lake again (as well as tonite if anyone wants to join me and a few others).  I will post a note in the next few days with details.  The more the better for the practice.  Also, don't forget fit2train is doing a swim/tranisiton workshop at Lake Ray Hubbard on Sunday.
