wurkit_gurl - 2007-06-01 3:54 PM I need drills, just swimming back and forth for 40 minutes isn't going to help me improve.

If you can already swim back and forth without stopping for 40 minutes, and you are shooting to finish your first tri, swim drills are probably the last thing you need to worry about at this point.

Ha. I like your edit. Don't drop the weights completely. I can feel the difference - especially in my arms, when I remember to do my 20 minutes of weights a week.

While drills may or may not be useless, building base is really important as you start swimming/biking/running regularly. Sometimes base building is the hardest thing to do.

I never suggested hiring a coach for sure. (And the ST reference had the face which stands for joke/sarcasm)

Anyway, pick a plan and just tweak a few things, for instance, if your plan calls for 30 min swim then go to http://forums.usms.org/forumdisplay.php?forumid=95 and pick a workout that will fit into the time frame. You can pick from different sessions (technique, speed, distance, etc.). I personally add 300-500 yds of drills at almost every swim session. I do it after my warm up and before my main sets.

Anyway the point of my previous post was to choose a plan, give it time to work, let your fitness develop as you train and above anything be consistent. Don’t jump from one plan to the next within weeks because that will just slow your progress.

Hah, no I'm not quite there yet! I just meant, going back and forth without any real plan as to how fast, how many lengths without stopping, how much rest time, etc. seems like it wouldn't be very helpful.

You know ...... you can always spend the little bit of money it takes to become a Gold Member here on BT and get access to the coaches that work with BT as part of the deal ........

I'm pro strength training.

I've broken down my training routine to the essentials.  Lat pulldowns, bicep curls, and pushups for swim.  I do a few lower body exercises that I found on runnersworld.com for running (duh) and biking.

It doesn't take a lot of time to do them, so it leaves me with plenty of time to put into the bike, swim and run.  But the routine is very effective and I don't have to worry about over training!

Wow, for a beginner triathlon forum, workit gurl is getting some harsh sounding criticism mixed in with decent advice.

1) You are probably doing enough. Great advice on looking several years back in people's logs and seeing what they started with

2) It's OK to do weights if you want to

3) Look into a book called "swim workouts in a binder" by gale bernhardt, she can help you figure out how to spend your 40 minutes in the pool

4) Drills are a good investment of time as technique is vital in swimming, less so in running and even less so in biking (but still important in all three)

5) Don't be offended by anything you read on an internet forum. Having this discussion in a rooom full of chips & dip, beer, pretzels and some board games, it would probably have a comletely different tone.

That's sort of what I was thinking. I did drills with a kickboard to learn bilateral breathing the other day, and it was time well-spent - I can do it no problem now. With the running, I'm building up to the 5K because I've never run and want to prevent injury - so it's not really drills as it is pacing to build endurance - I mean, if you've never run before, I would imagine it's stupid to just go out and straight run 3.1 miles your first time. I'm sort of in the school of thought that pushing yourself like that is dangerous.

WIth the bike, I just kind of go out and ride - there are lots of little hills around here to tackle which I'm sure is helpful, and if I get bored on flats, I'll go up to a bigger gear just for resistance.

THere are people who spend years trying to learn bilateral breathing, you're a natural! Good work.
