Subject: Need bike ideas for 6'8" husband
Hi all,
(Cross posted on the Classified thread)

My husband is NOT a triathlete, but wants to do training rides with me. He is 6ft8inches, but not heavy for his height - about 225 pounds. He, the non-helmet wearer, also thinks that his 30 year old bike is fine, just fine, although the brakes work intermittently, and the seat is ripped. I was thinking that it will cost more to tune up for Father's Day than it will be for a new bike, but I need some knowledge - and ideas for an inexpensive bike for him ($250 range, perhaps)

Does anyone know what size bikes come in now? He said his bike was one of the tallest made, and I don't know if they make them tall enough for him anymore. Also, what type of bike for road/and paved trail rides?

I will be going to a bike shop, but I would like some info first, so I have a clue. Any suggestions would be most appreciated,
Thanks,
Nancy

I am 6'7" and have a 64cm frame, which is a little big.  I really need a 63cm.  That being said, it is hard to say.  I might have longer legs and a shorter torso than your husband, there are several factors that need to be taken into consideration, plus not all bikes are measured the same.  You really just don't want to buy a bike to buy a bike.  However, I did notice that he was only using it for short training rides so the fit would not matter as much as for a 4 hr ride I would guess.  I would think if you find something in the 63cm range it should be close to the right fit but just be careful.

Check out bikesdirect.com or ebay.   I got my bike on ebay but it is sold on bikesdirect.com for around $350/shipping included brand new and it works great.  My race this weekend I avg 22.3mph for 16.7 miles.

I wouldn't worry about it until you get to the bike shop.  Although it will be a challenge to find a new bike for $250 or less.  That's more the Target/Walmart price range I think.

I my opinion, I would recommend going with a tune-up, new brakes, and new seat.   You could have a fair amount of work done for $250.  If it's just for casual riding, an older frame is fine.

If he's anything like my husband, who is 6'4'', he will probably kick butt even on an old icky bike.  Those longs legs can do amazing things.  My husband speeds around on 80s ten-speed (fixed up ones) and regularly tells me about the guys on tri bikes that he beats on the path.

But... he must wear a helmet.  Otherwise, please don't encourage him to ride by giving him a bike.

Thanks for the info - he is long legged, also, so your bike size would probably work for him. I appreciate your help

I am getting him a helmet for our next ride - otherwise, I am going to sneak out of the house without him

I just called the bike store and they are talking $750 for a new bike for his size, so we may be doing a tune-up. And he did still beat me the other day on his old bike!!

Thanks for the help!

Good luck.  My husband simply loves his old fixer-upper bikes.  Have fun!

I'm 6'5" tall, 245 lbs and I ride a 61cm tri bike.  It seems to fit well.  I don't think he would have trouble finding a bike to fit, but it might be a problem finding a bike that fits, that stays in that price range.

Good luck!

I am 6'6" and my 64 cm bike fits me perfectly after we got a longer seat post.

$250 range will be hard. for $350 you can get the trek 7.2 fx hybrid.

Trek makes a frame for guys that size. You can find it here.

I would point out you ahve to be careful though.

a trek 1000 63cm would be way too small and a trek 2100 63cm would barely fit me. important to know what size you need.
