Event warmup:

Forgot my helmet and had to have someone bring it to me. Heart was beating a million BPM as it didn't show up until 15mins before race start!
Swim
  • 18m 14s
  • 547 yards
  • 03m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

The worst experience in my life. I had never swam continuously for more than 100m before and it was just ugly. Gulped so much water, trouble breathing, dizzy from the waves. Considered quitting at about 200m. blah.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to swim.
Transition 1
  • 04m 1s
Comments:

So dizzy from the swim I sat down for a good 2 mins trying to gain composure. I ended up throwing up my breakfast into my towel.
What would you do differently?:

learn to swim
Bike
  • 38m 14s
  • 11.18 miles
  • 17.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Actually quite please with the bike. Passed a lot of people, kept a good pace. And I was on a mountain bike!
What would you do differently?:

Get a road/triathlon bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

took about 4 tries to get the bike to stay. Because I am so tall the rack was about the same height as my seat so I was more leaning it than racking it.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 30m 38s
  • 2.49 miles
  • 12m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt like 1000lbs. I just couldn't seem to turn them over. Ended up walking about half of the time.

Met Helen in the last KM of the race who dragged me along with her to the end. She saved my life as far as I am concerned!
What would you do differently?:

practice bricks more.
Post race
Warm down:

close to passed out

What limited your ability to perform faster:

swimming ability. overall fitness.

Event comments:

I was not ready for a triathlon. 5 months ago I couldn't run 2km, or swim 50m. I am going to do it again next year with a vengeance though and kick the water's ass. :D

While your results may not have been what you were expecting, I think you did a great job just because you attempted the race and you finished it. Two thumbs up!!!

Now, why wait until next year to do it again? There are lots of events throughout southern Ontario all the way up to September. Continue training and participate in other events to gauge your improvements.

As a reference, like you, I started from scratch just last year (couldn't run for more than 2 minutes) and with consistent training I was able to improve significantly. See this thread which I posted last year as an example.

Congrats again Rob.   How did you manage to bump into Helen?  Did you know each other before hand?  That's so cool.  I heard some BT'ers marked their legs BT at the race, I didn't know anything about that.
