Subject: clipless pedals and pearl izumi - clueless
I have a pair of Pearl Izumi Vagabond shoes (mtb - http://www.pearlizumi.com/pearlizumi/image/product/5010-1.jpg) and I finally got my SPD pedals (Shimano 505) put back on my bike. I've read the SPD literature - twist foot to clip in and out. Not too hard. I spent the entire ride yesterday trying to clip in, and could get the front of the cleat hooked but nothing else. Then when I finally got one foot nice and stable, I couldn't get it off the pedal no matter how hard I turned my foot.
The treads on the shoes leave a very very small amount of space and it seems as tho it actually prevented the cleats from getting enough sideways movement to lock in, and if you do lock in you can't get out. Any advice on this? Anyone had these shoes or similar? Am I just utterly clueless when it comes to clipless pedals?

Thanks

Yep, sounds pretty clueless to me. But we all start off that way.

I haven't ridden SPD pedals in a while, but I don't remember having to twist to get the cleat into the pedal, seems like you hooked the back of the cleat then pushed down on the front to lock in. At least that's how my Looks operate. Then you twist your foot out to release.

Maybe the pedal is too tight? There is an adjustment screw to loosen the tension.

Are the cleats installed correctly on the shoe?

I also advise every clipless newbie to practice ont he trainer first.

You may need to trim the treads on the sole of the shoe to allow proper engagement and disengagement of the pedals. I have had shoe/pedal combinations where a significant amount of work with an x-acto knife was necessary. This is not unusual for MTB shoes/pedals.
