My first time doing Muncie, my first 1/2 IM - I am looking for feedback on the course...
I've heard the run is hilly, but what's the bike like?
I see in last years pictures, not too many wetsuits, is the water that warm?

Thanks.

I swam out there a month or so ago and you should be fine w/o a wetsuit (as far as temperature).  The bike course is not too hilly.  It goes out from the reservoir onto the greenway then onto state road 35 (couple little dips here and there), over west a few miles then turn around.  Most of the return is the same, but you come around the reservoir from the north on the return (you leave from the east and south side).  It's Indiana, I wouldn't say it is hilly.

I have e-mailed the sponsors about the run route, but have not received a reply.  I am fairly sure the run is basically the perimeter of the reservoir, into Muncie, then back, but I can't figure it out for sure from the map on the website.  Not much help there.

I spoke with a friend who is doing the race, he says the water will most likely be above 78 degrees, he also said the bike course was fast, some rollers but 2/3 of the course is tree lined blocking wind and last half is slightly down hill. He said the run is small rollers with shade. I've never raced farther than a sprint, so it should be interesting.

I wouldn't count on the wind being completely blocked! I ride parts of the route every week and there are sometimes some nasty winds as the course is mostly an out and back running southeast and then back northwest. I'd say the water is already above 78! I was in it a week and a half ago and it was pretty warm. If you're doing the HIM the routes are posted on www.muncieendurathon.com. They don't have the sprint routes yet which is what I'm doing....thought for about 5 minutes on the HIM and decided that sprint was good for me. Oh, and it's usually very hot!!!

You'd figure with my wife from Muncie and the fact we got married there I'd know the terrain. I've driven Rte 35 many times, but the run on the map doesn't mean much to me, I've never been on the trailway down that far.

Thanks.

I was just looking at the run course on Google Earth. It's an out and back all on county roads with some minor elevation changes. I wouldn't call it hilly but certainly wouldn't say that it's flat.

The ride won't be too bad, the road out of the transition area has some very bumpy sections where they have drizzled asphalt to cover cracks. After that it's not too bad. I did the route slightly modified about a month ago. The only "hill" I had trouble with was on the second to last leg on E Windsor just after the S CR-475 E intersection.. It's not steep so much as it is just a long upward climb. After that, the last leg (can be) a fast ride back to the transition area.

With only 2 weeks left, I'm still in awe that there are less than 50 people signed up.

OK...I'm in for the AquaBike.  Not sure I'm ready for a HIM and my knee has been giving me trouble when running, so here we go...  :-)

Sweet! I'm locked in on the sprint! I'm going to try and make the swim tomorrow...although I've got a sore shoulder so I'll probably just stay in the beach area. I'll get across that thing before the summer's over!!!

The weather for the race day (as of today 7/10) looks sweet, 82 deg F for a high, light wind in the forcast from the east. Sounds like it could be a fast day. However the low is just below 60 deg, I wonder being that cool will the water be a bit foggy in the early AM - that'll make navigation fun.

Across?

The OWS he is talking about goes across the reservoir from the beach area then back again.  The actual event goes along the shore line.

About 2600 yards worth!!! It looks like they're doing it again on July 28th...I'll be in Ohio at the Duathlon Nats. but hopefully we'll keep doing this until the water gets to cold this fall!
