I want to do this triathlon but coming from Norcal it's a big expense. The tri itself is at least $160 plus travel expenses and lodging. Is it worth it? How good is this triathlon? Has anyone on here done it in the past? I just did the San Diego tri last week-end and it was a lot of fun.

I have done this tri two years now and I really enjoyed it . It is rather unique in that it is a point to point through a major city . You ride on major streets and Blvd in LA and run every red light while the cops keep the cars away. No loops and repeating scenery.
Some things could be better . Like the water in and out being too close to each other . And them running out of medals which was a bummer for me last year.

I aggree its pretty pricey . But i will be back !

Anyone else ?

I did the Oly last year for the first time.  It's a lot of money, but it's one of those races you just gotta do.  Like Paul, I noticed a LOT of things the RDs should be doing better, that even small tris get right.  And the point to point can be a PITA, even with someone willing to drop you off and pick you up.

The surf is fun too

I'll be on vacation this year so won't be doing it

Did the Olympic in 2006. Won't be around for this year's event, otherwise I'd eagerly do it again.

I agree with Paul: riding through the streets of LA without traffic is certainly one of the race's highlights. It was especialy cool through Hollywood and up the last climb which then drops you down into the downtown area. The finish at Staples Center also provides nice atmosphere.

As for the surf, that made it even more fun. Actually, I felt we were lucky last year. Once you got through the breakers, the water was warm and clean, and that's not always the case down at Venice.

The run begins with a punishing hill. I don't guess that many have set PRs on that particular course. Nice loop through little Tokyo, though.

Expensive, yes. Still, I'd happily do the race again if I had the chance.

LA's my volunteer race.  If I get the same assignment as last year, I'll be the guy at the start with the timing box.

hey all,

I just registered for the LA Sprint distance clydesdale. Should be fun...hopefully I will improve on my abysmal swim performance at Redondo :P

Plus it DOES look like a great race and the starting line (Venice) is only 2 miles from my apt.

Not really. Just moved to SoCal from MN and live in Irvine. I can't wait for the race!

Sooo... who got the message today from Pacific Sports that the Oly run course is now going to be two loops on Grand Avenue, instead of out-and-back down to the river?  Like one time up that dang hill isn't enough????  Mean, very mean.

Yeah, that's gonna suck (if I were doing it...)

I'm also in for this race. My third time. Got that message last night as well about the Oly run course change, and I'm not thrilled about it. The current course was a nice out and back, now it's 2 loops. They also move the T2 transition area into the finish line area rather than the previous 1/2 mile or so away. This is a big improvement. Let's hope for calmer waters at Venice this year!

I got the same email announcing the "very exciting changes" for the course. The move to a 2 lap 10K run course is hardly "exciting", but when you consider you now have to go up one of the steepest paved streets in all of Los Angeles twice, maybe they should have used the word "frightening" instead. As for the two trips down that hill, the word "jarring" comes to mind.

I wonder what is behind the decision to change the run course like this. Does anyone know? It just seems to me that with all the options to create a run course in downtown LA that this particular one shows a major lack of creativity. And to add insult to injury, calling it two "loops" is quite misleading. It's actually two "out and backs" on the same street! How boring.

Probably they couldn't get permits to close the extra roads.  I am really disappointed.  I had to bail on this race last year due to a chronic injury, and aall season I have been rehabbing after surgery on both legs in January with this race as my unfinished business goal ... I can't imagine that up Grand Avenue twice would be all that good for me (and my doctors are Kaiser, shame on them).  Plus talk about boring.  I can run hill repeats at home ... Oh, well!  I guess I will just suck it up, do it as well as I can, have fun, and pick another Oly in the not-too-distant future.

The expense and yucky roads already put me off, but the double-hill out-n-back sealed the fate. Plus I live here, so I can always do it in the future if I REALLY want to.

Signing up for Carpinteria Oly (9/30) as have/are a few others here. Looks beautiful and well organized; bike course is pretty hilly, though. Not awful ... but pretty, and hilly.

Hope to see some of you there!

Unfortunately not joining you this year at Carpenteria, but it is a GREAT race.....very well organized. If you hate waves, this is the race to do.....maybe 1 or 2 foot waves ....non-existent. The bike course is hilly, but fun! The run has some hills, too. Had a blast with this race....enjoy!

Does anyone want to do the LA Tri in a relay?

I really wanted to do this race again this year, but have been dealing with running injuries the past 2 months and now realize I just won't be in shape to run a 10K, much less run one at the end of an Olympic distance tri. The more brutal run course this year doesn't help either.

I'm mainly interested in doing the swim portion of the race. Last year I was first in AG and 110th overall for the swim in some pretty rough surf (see Chris' pictures above), so I know I can make a good contribution to a relay team.

I'll be OK to do the bike portion if someone else is dying to do the swim. I'm in much better bike shape than last year, plus I just got a professional bike fit and it has really made a difference. Unfortunately I'm DOA for the run so someone else will need to take that one.

Well, what do you think?

I was going to do the Olympic, but with work and life I wasn't able to trian the way I wanted to. So I have opted to do just the bike ride instead.
