Hey ya'll ! I am ready to get off my butt and get healthy again. I changed departments at work several months ago and went from literally running around for 8 hours to my current position of sitting in front of a computer for 12 hours a day. Needless to say that I have gone from needing to lose 10 lbs to needing to lose 30 ! And, did I mention the smoking? Well it has completely gotten out of hand. I can't believe I work in a hospital and smoke a pack a day, this is insane. I did just start taking a prescription medication called Chantix that should reduce the cravings. For the weight loss issue, I don't own a scale. I know that I weighed 165 lbs when I went to the doctor in mid June for a routine checkup and if that wasn't enough to upset me into changing my lifestyle the results of my cholesterol test was a wake up call. Let's just say that I had better do something and do it now ! I am just going to assume that I still weigh around 165 at least for a couple weeks, until I can get the courage to buy a new one, the last one got hurled in the trash when it told me I weighed 155.......I wish I had listened ! I have decided to stick with a low carb diet initially, because it worked for me several years ago and it wasn't to difficult to stick with. I need to work on staying motivated to exercise. I really have no excuse, I have a Bowflex, 2 large active dogs that love to go run, and a safe neighborhood to run around ! If anyone out ther has been in my shoes, your advise and comments would be welcome !

I can relate only too well!

I had a similar awakening in 2003 - 30 lbs overweight, still smoking, went for a routine check up - found out my blood pressure was high - really did not want to take meds - so for me it was

a last call - in 2003, thus the name lastcall2003 - it is a reminder of where i was and how far i have come - i have slipped back 12 lbs, am determined not to let it get any more out of control than it is

been going through some things at work lately in addition to struggling with some injuries that have made it tough - not to mention the fact that i remodeled my kitchen and had to eat out fo 4 months - not a good combo!

i am with you - ready to get back at it!

good luck!

Thanks Lastcall2003 !
I think I am going to start with some goals for the month of July that are reasonable:

*Buy a scale
*Not hurl the scale through a wall after getting on it
*Stick with the low carb dieting plan
*Quit smoking (or be darn close to quitting)
*Walk for 30 minutes 2x/week
*Bike for 30 minutes 2x/week
*Make an appearance at the YMCA so they won't think they've been collecting that monthly bank draft from an imaginary member........

Ya'll feel free to verbally kick my a** via email if I appear to fall off the wagon at any time...

LOL

you do the same!  I am headed out on the bike trail with a friend of mine tomorrow morning - a little apprehensive, because he is younger (a lot) and a lot faster, I told him my limitations and he still wanted to go - so it will be a good challenge for me

i like your idea of setting goals for the month that are achievable, sometimes it just seems waaaaaaaaaaay too overwhelming!

good luck and let me know how it goes :-)

Hmm, you're in south Georgia? You should sign up for the sprint triathlon in Cordele - at Lake Blackshear - on August 18. It'll be fun!

Smoked for 16 years.  Was 294lbs in January.

Since then, I have:
-Been quit for a little over a year
-Lost 36 lbs as of this AM
-competed in a Tri-a-Tri, and a 10km race with 2 sprints and an oly to come.
-Not on a diet at all, just eat better automatically
-love the life change: more energy, motivation, outside and doing stuff

It was not easy to get going, but when I did, there is no turning back.  I Love It.

The VERY FIRST THING you have to do is TOSS THE SMOKES!!!  Check out www.quitnet.org

there is a lot of truth to that! - quitting the smokes is essential

i have been a non-smoker for about 3 years now - although if i'm totally honest, i still struggle with the temptation every once in a while, especially if i'm hanging out with people that still smoke

since omaha has banned smoking in restaraunts and bars that serve food - the opportunities for temptation are fewer and further between - which helps

 you can do it!

Thanks ya'll for the encouragement ! The Chantix pills are really helping ! Watergirl, thanks for telling me about the tri in Cordele, I have to work that day and besides, I haven't ventured to the pool yet to make sure I remember how to swim ! Maybe I can sign up for my first one in the fall, the rest of this month and all of August and September are looking pretty crappy on my work schedule.

Thanks for the welcomes !
Good morning Beth ! So far, so good for July. I haven't slipped from the low carb plan, I would like to get more walking in, but work is hectic right now so I go run up and down the stairs whenever I can slip out of my office. I have decided to buy the scale Friday......a slightly higher priced one so I will be less likely to throw it, LOL. Me and the hubby are both off this weekend, so I am hoping we can go on a nice long bike ride ! I am still avoiding the YMCA, I think it's the skinny, way too hyper soccer moms who appear to be high on their kids Ritalin that scare me......I'll have to figure out the best time to avoid them.

Find inspiration wherever you can. What motivates me and what motivates you may be two different things. Find out what it is for you and hang on to it. In fact, find lots of things. (Mine: I want to be a great example for my nieces; I want to look good in clothes again; I want to feel fit and healthy; I want to improve my quality of life; I want to do new, amazing things into my 40s, 50s and 60s!)

You're doing great by setting reasonable goals -- do your best -- and then set new, bigger ones!

We are all a work in progress. But are you being the person you aspire to be TODAY? Be that person today. The weight loss, the fitness, the athletic accomplishments and whatever else you are dreaming of will come.

I lost a dear friend suddenly in September of 2006 and it reminded me that no moment is certain. So if I go today; was I doing the best I could with each moment?

Sure, we can't all quit our jobs and hit the road! Chances are we WILL live into our 70s or 80s -- so we have to plan for that too -- hence the job -- but take a piece out of each day and make it a slice of Heaven!

Wish you the very best of luck with your life changes!

keep it up! Low carb isn't necessarily the best for training--I did SBD for several years lost 70 lbs but found I couldn't maintain training intensity. Still follow the principles just eat a whole lot more and have kept the weight off.
Get to the gym at off peak times, you're more likely to find peeps who are in the same boat as you physically. Don't pay any attention to others either-though some of us "skinny" peeps have fat pics and weren't always the skinny ones--they could be a good source of encouragement. Bet the folks in the fitness center can point out who the "big losers" are weight wise.

Does your hospital have any healthy living incentives? Ours gives points for taking stairs, quitting cigs, healthy meals...Employee health may have the information on all that stuff if they offer incentives

good idea on the scale - i bought a good one a few years ago, and although i don't always like what it says - i know it's accurate, which makes it a lot harder to fool myself into thinking 'it must be the scale'

ok so my goals for the rest of july are as follows

stick to my training plan (minus the running - can't plantar fasciitis)

log my daily food intake

sprint tri at the end of the month (the run, will definitely not be a sprint - lol, hoping my foot is healed enough by then)

didn't want you to feel alone - we can help keep each other honest :-)

Hey Georgia,

How's it going?  July is almost over - my month has been pretty good, not as good as i wanted it to be - but i made forward progress, so that's the key

Welcome to BT all the posts have been very positive so I'll throw ya a bit of caution!!  Goals are great untill one is missed.  Base you happiness on progress.  2. Low Carbs mean low energy it will be very difficult to impossable to build a steady workout plan at anything but very low effort levals on a low carb diet.  Cut some of the junk out of your diet little by little. 3. set some completion goals such as running a mile in 3 weeks entering a 5k in 6 weeks ect stick to completion goals for now.  And lastly log every sucess that way when you are down you can go back and read about how far you have come.   by the way i was in your situation 15 months ago 196 pounds could not run 1/2 mile with out stopping and a triathalon was Ice cream, potato chips, and beer.  Good luck and train smart.
