Subject: Heart rate monitor strap during swim?
As I near my first Triathlon, I am still trying to learn the basics.

I always ride and run with a HRM and want to on race day.

I am not sure if it is okay to swim with it on or do you just place it on after the swim?

Thanks

It won't hurt it to swim with it on, so you're better off wearing it for the swim rather than spending time in transition putting it on.

Yes, it's okay to wear it during the swim.  But just like everything else - "nothing new on race day".  Practice swimming with it on few times before your race.

Definitely try it first.  I can't swim with my strap on; it always starts sliding down my chest and ends up around my waist.  I just put in on in T1.

Just practice before hand.  I have to make sure mine is tight enough not to slide down.

Just make sure that you do not hit any of the start/stop/split/reset or other buttons on the HR/watch while it's anywhere underwater. Do all button pressing above water.

In my last race, I had the HRM already snapped into a loop and slipped it over my feet and up my legs after taking off the wetsuit. It worked better than the previous race, where I spent many seconds fumbling to get the strap arranged correctly.

I have started wearing my HR strap during the swim so I don't have to screw around with it in T1. I've also started wearing my tri jersey during the swim because it's tight enough to keep the HR strap from moving. I put the wrist part on in T1 because I don't trust my Garmin to be in the water.

This might be overly paranoid.

I push buttons on my Polar HRM all the time when I'm underwater.  Every 100m,  I'm pushing the lap button underwater.  It's how I keep track of my workout, and it's worked just fine for the past two years doing this.

Now, I'm not going to take my HRM down to SCUBA depths, but just check your particular HRM.  Most of them are pretty water resistant for a few meters.  (The Garmin are the notable exceptions, of course.)
