Subject: Mission Bay Tri
Hi, i'm registered for the Mission Bay tri. Anyone else? I'll be traveling down from Santa Barbara. It will be my first (very excited/nervous). Of course, I have a million questions....

Has anyone done this race before? Will I need a full wetsuit, or will my spring suit suffice? Its on sept. 30th so i'm wondering if the water will be too cold. How big is the race? Will the bay be calm or choppy?

hmm...thats all I can think of for now. ha, i guess its obvious that the swim is my biggest concern.

thanks!

I'll be there, my first tri too. I'm told the water will be nice and calm. I plan on wearing a wetsuit in order to make the swim easier for me...not real strong there yet! Should be a blast.

Ill be there as well doing my first Tri. I will probably rent a wet suit from some place local to help me out with the swim (my weakest point). Im looking forward to the race...and of course the after party!

This was the first Tri that I did last year. It's a great race for a first timer. I got there early to set up and figure out what and where I needed to be. The bay was a bit chilly but there were people swimming without wetsuits, although I would recommend one if you have one. Good luck to everyone!

Thanks for all the input! Good to hear this is a common first timer race. I'll see all you noobs there!

I'm looking into getting a full wetsuit. Hoping to find a deal on craigslist. I figure it is better to do some training in one, so its not awkward come race day.

also, i am doing a "practice tri" this Saturday: Steve's Tri on Goleta Beach. There is no registration and nothing is timed - SMALL AND NON COMPETITIVE! Since I know I won't be able to finish the 500m swim, it was comforting to hear that no one would care if I walked the rest of the way to my bike!

I figure it will be a good way to gauge how far i need to come and see what the transitions will be like.

so yea, are these "practice tri" things common?

The practice tris are very common, especially the closer we get to the Mission Bay tri. I have never done one of the practice tris, but I do do the beginner open water swims. Mission Bay was my first triathlon last year and the OWS practice helped me a lot. Good luck, see you at Mission Bay.

all this info is gearing me up big time.

well, i did the practice tri and i was able to finish the swim (800m). albeit very very slowly...

The bike and run went well (much faster at these), but I definitely have more training to do! Especially more open water practice. I'm going to search for some organized open water swims in Santa Barbara.

thanks again! see you there!

Hey, i'm also doing the Mission Bay Tri on sept 30th. This will be my first one. I have heard the water is calm down there, and it will be pretty calm, since it is in a bay, near the shore. I'm worried about it being dusty and sandy, if it's too windy. I was looking at the race area on google maps aerial images and noticed that. It looks like you already have a wetsuit in your picture.

thats awesome you are doing mission bay. Due to all the feedback from first-timers, I'm not as anxious as I was. Gotta love the google maps. I hadn't thought about sand/wind issues. Is the run on sand??? Is the area notorious for wind?

I have a cheap short-style wet suit that doesn't fit well. I got it at play it again sports, had it for about a year. I'm looking into getting a full tri specific suit, possibly the Zoot Z2 (closeout pricing at trisports.com), because of my terrible swim.

I haven't heard anything about wind, but it looks like the bike ride is around a small key/semi island which is really dry looking. If you look at the google map image, it's all sand. Just speculation, i might make sure i have some sun glasses for the ride. Especially at the warp speeds i'll be going on my mt. bike.

trisports also had http://trisports.com/swimcloseouts.htmlother closeouts.

I also have a spring wetsuit for surfing with no lower legs or arms. It's made of clothlike stuff on the outside, and the tri suits are smooth rubber. The guy at the tri store said i definitely cannot use it, LOL.

The wind on the bike can be bad at times, but it doesn't tend to pick up until the afternoon. I ride Fiesta Island all the time and it's not bad. I wouldn't worry to much about the sand I have never really had a problem, unless it rains that's about the only time you have to worry. There is one sharp turn on the ride when you are leaving Fiesta Island were a few riders had some nasty spills. The races have started putting up warning signs because of all the accidents. The curve just kind of sneaks up on you. Also right when you get on the bike there is a nice little hill to get you started on your bike. I was in the wrong gear last year and had to fight my way up the hill. You do the same hill 4 times. 2 times on the bike and 2 times on the run. You'll learn to hate the hill.

There is no sand on the run or the swim, the water entry/exit are on concrete boat ramps.

You can use any wetsuit you like, a surfing wetsuit may not speed you up which means you may be better off with out a wetsuit or just a rash-guard as I used to do it. The water should still be somewhat warm.

Don't forget, you can get a rented swimming wetsuit mailed to you prior to the race so you can try it out if you go through http://www.wetsuitrentals.com.

well for me, 5k is a lot. This really makes me want to drop out of the race. Seriously, I can't run on sidewalk for more than 5 minutes w/o my shins screaming, I'll just walk the run

Don't do that, if you have issues with shin splints read this http://www.sportsinjurybulletin.com/archive/0161.htm

I think you have enough time to strengthen them enough to get through this. If you do, just think, it will never be an issue again!

Please feel free to contact me directly regarding this, I am an intern fitness trainer right now and would be happy to answer any questions you might have regarding the subject.
Sincerely,
-Buck Williamson

Hey, don't worry about it, 5K is a lot for me too! We have 2 months till Mission Bay, and by that time, we'll both be in tip top shape. JAW_IV can help you out with the shin splint issues, but otherwise, i'm very sure you'll be ok by Sept 30th.

Hang in there!

Maybe I'll bail out and do the long beach tri instead.

x2, hang in there! you can do it, take care of those shins ( i recommend lots of ice after runs), and stay positive. two months and you will be ready.

maybe sand is easier to find than those little rocks they put into asphalt

Did you talk to the sports trainer who said he'd help?

mixie - 2007-08-02 3:07 PM

Running on concrete is so bad for your body! I don't really want to practice running on it to get ready for a race. I have zero pain when I run on asphalt so I am not going to change a thing. Why do they make running paths out of concrete?
