Subject: Numb toes
The situation: When I run on the threadmill for an extended period of time my toes go a little bit numb. I have new-ish shoes and switched to thinner socks. There seems to be plenty of room in the toe area

The question: It is the shoes anyway? Lacing to tight? I am new to triathlon world and any advice would help. Keep in mind I am an athena athelete so I wonder if it is just the impact from the extra weight.

Thanks for the help!

My largely uneducated guess would be that it's your shoes.

I battled with the same problem as a clydesdale athlete until I went for a proper shoe fitting.  I normally wear a size 11.5 or 12 but the folks at Phidippedes in Atlanta put me in 14's!  As soon as they did, my feet stopped going numb on long runs.

It's probably your shoes.  What do you mean by "new-ish" shoes?  I'm an athena, too, and have found I need to replace my shoes about every 6 months or I have a lot of pain while running.  Did you go to a good running store where they check out how you run for these shoes?  Are they the same size as your normal shoes (I go up 1/2 size in the winter and a full size in the summer)?  Are you lacing too tight?

There are a lot of issues that can come up with shoes.  One of the biggest recommendations I can make to anyone is to make sure that you go get your shoes from a store that will take the time to check out how you run and listen to the problems you are having with your current shoes.  I always bring in my old shoes when getting new ones so that they can check out the wear patterns and see if anything is off and if I need a different shoe.

I have the same issue when cycling - my toes and ball of the foot directly above the clip go numb and painful on longish rides. It helps immediately to walk, but my bike shoes aren't that tight so I really don't know. I've tried adjusting the clips but haven't found something yet that helps (cages never were a problem).

I have the same problem with numb toes when running on the treadmill but not outside, and on one foot whilst cycling just around the pad goes numb and tingly. I've tried a few brands of trainers and bike shoes to no avail. All a little mysterious!

i have the same issue as scfsara while riding. I have to unclip the foot and shake it for about 5 seconds then it feels better. It does not happen while running or when I wear other shoes while riding. It is definitely my riding shoes. Just not sure why.

Can't help with the running numbness but on the bike: keep your heels down while pedaling.

Thanks for all the advice! I losened the laces and took out these gel inserts the sales women told me to try, and the numbness is much better. I will try the heels down while on the bike however.

Thanks all!

I've had this problem in the past.  What's helped: stretching my hip flexors more, making sure I'm peddling with heels down, and making sure my cycling shoes are cinched to tight around my ankle (loosening them a bit around an hour into a long ride, wiggling toes frequently).

Wow heels down was huge information.  I was thinking about getting new shoes or pedals or both because my feet would hurt to the point I had to stop on long rides.  56+ yesterday and only a tiny bit of pain (mostly from old bad habits).  Thank you very much for this tip.
