What do you actually have to accomplish to become a triathlete ?

I'd have to say that you need to cross the finish line of any race

For me it was a process and continues to be a process. I called myself a triathlete after completing my first race.

I'd say pick a race and enter. The rest (training, obsessing, finishing) will fall into place and then you WILL BE a triathlete.

I'd also say crossing the finish line..... it was a great feeling wearing my BT t-shirt as I crossed.  (Got a lot of positive comments on the T-shirt)

I say if you are siged up for and event and training for it then you are a triathlete. Once you finish the race you can tell others that you are a triathlete.

I believe you must have completed a triathlon, whatever the distance.

this is such a complex question. i thought i would feel like a triathlete after i completed my first race...but it was just a step. the sport is a lot like life, you're never really done or complete. i have done two races and i wear my shirts mostly around the house, not out in public, because i don't feel like i've really earned bragging rights yet (wierd?). i would say i consider myself a beginner triathlete, which is why i'm here on this site. maybe i'll feel different after i finish and oly or an international distance, but then again there's the 1/2 im, then the im after that (and i doubt i will ever do an im). who knows. tris are something i enjoy doing, but for better or for worse, they aren't who i am.

You definitely have to finish a race to call yourself a triathlete.
One of the big motivating factors during my first race was to being able to wear my race tee shirt afterwards - I told myself I didn't deserve to wear it if I didn't finish...

i called myself a triathlete when i got the sticker from usat and put it on my truck!

seriously, though i agree with domlazz. i considered myself a triathlete when i started training and set my mind to doing it! finishing the race is the icing on the cake, but the skill/ability to finish the race is what makes me a triathlete!

Well, I thought I was gonna be in the minority as I read this thread (guess I still am) but I had the same thoughts as Dominic and Cristin.  To me, the training and lifestyle make you a triathlete. I don't feel that I became something different upon crossing the finish line of a race.

Big surpeise here, but I disagree with Gary, Dominic and Cristin. Would you call yourself a marathoner when you start training for a marathon?

How about triathlete-in-training until you complete your first race?

This is just me, but I set a goal of proving to myself that I could become a triathlete by finishing an Oly.  It was my own personal measure of success.  I feel you become a triathlete when you set your sights on a race and finish it, whether its a sprint, an Oly, an IM, etc.

When you train, you are not necessarily dealing with all the details that are involved in a race, like transitions, adrenalin and the unexpected.  You don't have the crowd or other competitors.  When doing mock tri's, you're on your home course, but in a race, everything is new, different and more exciting.  I would encourage everyone to make it a goal to finish a race as a prerequisite to becoming a triathlete so that they, too, can experience the sense of accomplishment and achievement that comes with crossing a finish line.  It is awesome.

I agree with you Karl - I personally feel a great sense of accomplishment and achievement in crossing the finish line.  However, I know a number of long-time runners, bikers and swimmers who have never entered a race and never will - they are motivated by something else and do not need to finish a race to feel a sense of accomplishment. I have a great deal of respect for that.

Maybe its just semantics here, but IMHO, "triathlete" is a generic term such as "runner", "golfer" that does not have a tangible, defined pre-requisite, such as marathoner, Ironman, and PGA Tour Professional.

There is another thread on this site about people wanting to impose a 13 hr cut-off to "better" define an Ironman.  Most people here are in disagreement with that.  To me this is a similar situation.    As always, just my 1 cents worth

Gary

i guess what i was trying to say was that i started training with the goal of finishing a race, which i have accomplished. but i think that's the case for everyone here. i think the intention toward reaching the goal, the work that you put into it and eventually completing the race is what makes you a triathlete.

if i had sprained my ankle and didn't do that race, i would have done another when i healed. if, god forbid, i had an injury which prevented me from finishing a race ever, i would not continue to call myself a triathlete.

to sum up all of this drivel, if you are in training and have your sights set on a race, you are a triathlete until something prevents you from being a triathlete.

Tough question.

My wife recording/camcordering the kids and I playing in the backyard doesn't make us "movie stars". So, one could say that just doing a race, doesn't make you a triathlete. Heck, lots of us have played basketball, but we don't refer to ourselves as "basketball players".

I think being a "triathlete" is almost something that is "peer decided". Personally, I train for triahtlons, I've done a few, but I don't refer to myself as a triathlete. I just say "I do triathlons".

I don't have a problem with someone that says they are a triathlete, I'm just saying that "saying it, doesn't make it so" (in the eyes of everyone).

Really, it's one of those things that's just not worrying about. Interesting to hear opinions ... but not worth worrying about.

Got to agree here. If asked to describe myself, I would maintain that I am just a casual athlete who runs marathons, rides centuries, and does the occasional triathlon.

There's really too much emphasis on labels. Call yourself what you will. Just don't expect everyone to agree until you have truly earned it.

My two cents: (for what they are actually worth)

When asked, I respond that I am training for triathlons.

When people respond with the look of "are you insane", and ask "how many years will it take for you to complete a triathlon?" I know the person only thinks of the IM in Hawaii, and I let them know that there are many different distances, and I am training to do sprints and the distance that was on the Olympics.

I tend to agree with bear - don't worry about the label; concentrate on the feeling of accomplishment you will have when you complete your first race.

And, keep on triing!!!!!

Main Entry: tri·ath·lete
Pronunciation: trI-'ath-"lEt, ÷'a-th&-
Function: noun
: an athlete who competes in a triathlon

This can be debated until we are all blue in the face!

I think it is a personal preference!
