Any suggestions on an open water swim for a beginner? Just looking for some ideas around Nashville. How have the others on this board practiced open water swims?

I know this is 3 months late and you wouldn't want to swim OW this time of the year.   But Percy Preist has many areas/beachs/Parks where you can get good OW swims in.

FYI - I ususally swim at Long Hunter State park beach - Bryant Cove.  You can swim along the shore area and be safe from the boats.  Its always good to swim with someone in a kayak for protection.

Designated Swim Areas on J. Percy Priest Lake

Swimming on J. Percy Priest Lake is one of the more popular water-based activities. Swimming is prohibited at launching ramps, mooring points, marinas, public docks, and posted areas. It is allowed elsewhere, but for safety's sake please swim only in specifically designated areas. These areas are much safer as they are off-limits to boaters of all kinds. They are surrounded by “restricted area” buoys and a floating orange pipeline. The Corps of Engineers operates three such swim areas on J. Percy Priest: Anderson Road, Cook, and Seven Points Campground. Anderson Road and Cook both have sand beaches and playgrounds and there is a nominal Day Use Fee. Pets are prohibited at Anderson Road and Cook Recreation Areas. Seven Points Campground includes a sandy beach for registered campers and their authorized visitors. Anderson Road and Cook Recreation Areas offer picnic sites, group shelters, boat launching ramps, and bathrooms.

Other designated swim areas at J. Percy Priest include Nashville Shores (admission to park required), and Long Hunter State Park – Bryant Grove (user fee required).

I swam a few times last summer with a group that meets on Friday nights at the Hamilton Park sailboat marina (Priest Lake). There were often 8-12 people who swam, plus maybe a few on the shore (family members). We swam from the beach area on the left of the boat docks out to the buoys at the mouth of the bay and back, something like 1 mile total. Try as we might in a pool, there is just no way to simulate an OWS. I plan to join this group again in 2008 because it was a great help to my technique.

What month does this group start meeting to swim at the Hamilton Park sailboat marina? I'm new to BT, live in Nashville and am looking to do my first triathlon in May. Can't wait! However, I've been curious as well as to whether there are some groups that practice OWS. I'd love to be a part of it. If possible, I'd appreciate it if you could either keep me up to date when the time of year draws near or give me some info up front. Thanks.

Not sure when they will start, the water is pretty cold until May.  I will let you know via this thread when I will start, sometime early May - with a wetsuit if its chilly.

Actaully - I haven't heard anything else about it. I know a friend and I are going to start doing some open water swims soon on our own. I can give you a week notice if you're interested.

I know this was an old thread but last minute today I drove to Nashville and went out for a swim here. Great advice guys. And they say the Internet is useless. Ha. Thanks so much!
