Motivated!
Hello! Add me to the list. I've got a group of 5 other people (6 total) from Kansas/Missouri (KC area) coming down with. Should be fun, this will be my fifth year in a row competing. If anyone new to the event wants to know about race site, course, logistics let me know.

Mike,

Definetly interested in any information. This is my first tri and I am coming from Moscow to do it (I'm american not Russian just here on business for a couple of years). Anyway, I am slow on the bike solid in the water and learning to run. Any advice about the race would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Paul -
Great to see so many people trying this event as their first ever. (This was my first triathlon 5 years back). The event is awesome, well organized, great volunteers and 3000 other people. What could be better. A few things to note. The average water temp is right about 78 degrees, so it's always borderline as to wetsuit "legal" or not. For those who do not plan on "placing" USA triathlon rules allow wetsuits up to 84 degrees. For the swim, the wind/current tends to blow towards Vinoy park, so depending on the weather, you may get a little boost into transition (and we can all use that). The depending on strength of wind, the water can get choppy, though the morning start tends to lessen this. That being said, the day's weather tends to be hot and humid mid to high 80's temp. (especially for us Midwesterners from Kansas used to training in the cold). The bike course is as described above - flat and fast. Some people may notice the wind off of the bay, but you should still be able to fly. The run course is flat and hot as well. Some locals will be nice enough to "hose off" competitors as they run by. Since last year they moved the transition (increased ran enrollment from 2K to 3K) they required a bike check in the night day before. (You may want to bring a plastic bag to cover your seat to avoid a wet seat the next morning).
For people coming from out of town, I would recommend bringing your own bike. You can rent a bike case (or buy one for approx. $300) at local bike shops. Transporting bikes ona plane range anywhere from $75 - $200 per direction. You could also contact the race organizer or sponsoring bike shops to have your bike shipped to them.
The wave starts are always a question. They will start with the pro's/elites with 5 minutes between the pro/elite men and woman, then have 2-3 minutes times between general wave starts. They will list the wave starts on the website forum the week of the race. The last waves tend to be the novice groups(so they can avoid getting "climbed" over in the swim). One last note about the bike, I don't remember any railroad tracks, though they have a number of "speed bumps" and a few sharp turns (e.g. turn around). They will also have a water bottle exchange on the bike around mile 18-20. The bike ends with a section of pave (brick road) right before you enter the transition for the run. Run course has a number of water stations with the first one about 2-3 miles out.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone. Have fun training!

If I recall correctly, the railroad tracks are out on the long stretch of First Avenue toward I-275.

Uh...why does it always come down to the guys getting their butts in gear???  I hate when that happens!  Hey, karl...maybe she has been visiting our logs.  It seems that we are the ones with the yellow and white glow to our logs!   I hate it when they are right!!!

CALLING ALL RE-PEAT ST ANTHONY'S RACERS ----- we beginners are looking for guidance, not on the race course or strategy. NO NO. We want to know where we can party together!

Is there a way for some altruistic soul to venture to identify a location and time? Posting threads is cool but getting together in Florida in person --- priceless.

Takers?

Guarantee I will be there to meet everyone.

Adam,

The parties are already being planned, and have been for some time!!  No worries!!  I may not be the fastest during the race, but I can guarantee we'll have GREAT parties before, during and after the race!!!   :-

Right now, there's nothing definitive...as the race gets closer, we'll post something.  BTW, we're inside of 2 months before the Race.  I hope everyone is training!

SOme inside info. We here near St. Pete have heard that the bike is a fairly technichal ride so practice those hairpin turns and on a vareity of terrains.

Ok, I thought the race was full. How are you just now getting in? My calendar originally called for me to have my children that weekend, but it has changed. NOW I could go, but obviously registration is closed. Are there really still slots available with TNT?

Have thought about signing up as a volunteer so I can come join the fun with my BT-friends. AND 'body marking' sounds like lots of fun!!

TNT is certainly a wonderful way to get in, if even they have slots left (not quite sure how that works).  Another way you might try is to look on the satriathlon.com discussion forum.  Sometimes there are people who have slots who's plans have changed and you might luck out with a transfer slot.  Chances aren't great, but it's worth a try.

There are still a couple of slots left in the Meek & Mighty race on Saturday. You could do that race and then volunteer for the St. Anthony's race on Sunday!

Hey, Sue, thanks for the inside info.  Please forgive me for being a smart ass, since I'm asking you this question with a smile on my face, but, aside from the occasional drawbridge and sinkhole, what is technical about St. Pete?
