Subject: "Going Long" Training plans-am I missing something???

Question for anyone that is using this book - I found the weekly training plans in back, some charts in the fron showing weekly hours, annual hours and longest bike ride for the week.  OK - is there anywhere that gives a daily schedule for each of the periods - Prep 1,2,3;  Base 1,2 etc???????

Or am I supposed to develop that from the general goals suggested for each week?

No daily schedule, just the sample routines from Novice Nick, etc (The case studies chapter).

The absence of daily workouts is why I think beIRONfit is an equal, or possibly slightly better book for the newer triathlete.

That's why I bought Training Plans for Multi-Sport Athletes, by Gail Bernhardt.  She frequently refers to Friel's book and she has plans that have specific workouts on specific days for a designated plan length.  I think that Going Long contains good information and reading it is time well spent, but if you are new to Ironman, a book with detailed plans is a big help.

I can echo what TigerPhil said.  I have the Be Iron Fit, Going Long, and Triathlete Training Bible.  All do a good job of describing training.  However, when it comes down to building your daily plans, Gail Bernhardt's book is the only one that really takes it down to that level of detail.  The real challenge of being self trained is to continually test and adjust your training based upon areas that require attention or focus.

I 100% agree. Particularly when training for such a long race as an Ironman.

Having a coach that can read your "signs" and adjust your training schedule will:

1. help you get to the start line INJURY FREE

2. keep you from burning out during your build up (the most important part), which occurs towards the end of the training program

3. adjust your heart rate zones and training intensity as your body "gets in shape" as you progress through the regimine.

I've used both of Joe friel's books for IM WI 2004 w/ some success. Unfortunately, Going Long is more of a supplement to the Triathlon Training Bible than a stand-alone book. You need the background from TTB in order to complete a "self-coached" plan with Going Long. However, Going Long does have many good articles on nutrition, mental conditioning, Transistions, etc.

Good Luck!
