OK, less than 8 days to go and time for me to start haunting this thread. Dollars to donuts says this will be a non-wetsuit swim. I am bringing both my ZOOT Zenith wetsuit and speed suit. Bike looks good with relatively (coming from AZ, all heat is relative) cool temps. I'm riding the Zipp disc and 404 front. Run should be warm, my Aunt who lives local says it will be warm, but I live for warm/hot. I can't wait to see this course and race this race! I will be on my Scott Plasma on the bike and wearing my ZOOT Ultra team suit, keep an eye out for me!

Is there a BT meet up planned?

I can't imagine the water cooling down if the air temps are in the upper 80s low 90s all week.  Not having a wetsuit is one less thing to shove in a plastic bag at T1 so that will make it a little easier.  Plus a river water wet wetsuit steaming up inside a plastic bag all day gets pretty stinky.

bhoover10001 posted the following invite for Saturday back on 6/30...a couple people had expressed interest but no RSVPs since then that I've seen:

bhoover10001 - 2008-06-30

Pre-race dinner information:

If anyone is up for it.... this is where I will be at 5pm for dinner:
Pizzio's
2484 West Third St
Santa Rosa, CA 95401

Let me know if you are coming. They don't open until 5, and are open until 9.

(Me, I'll be on my Scott definitely-not-Plasma in ZOOT gear so all-black you'd think I was from New Zealand or something...)

Hi all,

Here's a variation on the "prepardness" theme....  Due to first the Humboldt fire, then the stupid lightning fires here in California, I've been cooped up in our Emergency Operations Center for most of the last month.  The few time's I've been able to workout, the air quality was so horrible that I gave up.   I've gotten in a grand total of 12 workouts in the last month, the last time I did anything was 8 days ago....

I toyed with the idea of skipping the race all together, but I just can't bring myself to do that, both the thought of throwing away the room and race fee's, as well as all the time and effort put into the training (I was on track, until about mid-June).

So, to put a positive spin on this... I decided that I will use this as an "social experiment".  Essentially, I tapered (quit) a month ago, so this will be my own little test... To see if an extra long taper (and a fully "rested" body) is good (or bad).  Last year my time was 6 hours, 9 minutes.  I was hoping to break 6 hours this year....   We shall see how that works out for me...

Good luck, everyone, take it easy this last week, and enjoy the experiance!!!!

Dennis

Well, the weather is setting up real nice for me. When I train in the heat and then get a cool day I feel like I am shot out of a cannon! HR stays low, pace picks up. I'll be the one shivering before the swim, though...

Probably around10:00 or so. I have to pick up my bike from TriBike Transport at 10:00, drop off my run gear at 11:00, pick up my race packet at 12:00, and then catch the 1:00 athlete meeting.

Ditto for me on Saturday (not surprising since Bryan's a "D" last name and I'm a "C")...well, all except the bike pickup, that is...

We're driving up from LA Friday morning, staying just about a mile north of the swim/T1. Figure we'll get checked in around 3:00-3:30 and we may drive the course then, to avoid what I suspect will be a lot more traffic out there on Saturday afternoon. I figure we'll be back sometime between 5:30 and 6:00...could join people for a bite then (before the 7:00 reception...or get together and hang after that).

We're definitely up for the 5:00pm Italian dinner in Santa Rosa on Saturday, if that's the consensus plan.

I believe last year had similar circumstance and they released water from the dam and cooled it off, is that correct?

I know that many do this race as a first HIM because there are less man eating sharks in the river, the depth of the river is pretty shallow, it is usually wetsuit legal and swimming is generally the "great divide" among triathletes, and the course isn't too hill like Wildflower.

I was supposed to be doing this with my mother in law, a past Olympic marathoner that doesn't agree with swimming too much, so much of my assumptions above are based on why I helped her choose this race, though she had to drop out.

Anyway my reason for stating that is to bring up that I bet they do another water release to try and get the temp under wetsuit temps, if for nothing else than the economics of more people coming back because it should be wetsuit legal again.

Just a hunch, but I imagine the engineers at the dam are already shifted to work early Sunday morning.

Good luck in your taper folks, I'll see ya there.

Checking in same time as many with my B.

Hello Vinepeoples!  I'm not sure about being able to make it to dinner, but kurtiskaun and I'll be doing a small swim (20-ish minutes) on Saturday morning.  We're planning on starting from Johnson's Beach at 8:00 am.  Anyone else up for a pre-race swim?

So far reading the recent postings, everyone looks ready?! Ditto on Saturday schedule as I am going to register at about 10-10:30 and have lunch with family in Windsor, and then back for 1PM meeting.. I'll be wearing what's in my avatar (I'm the one with the white cap) and have tattoos on both legs.. I will have BT on my calf so if anyone sees it, feel free to give a hollar!

Good luck BT'ers!

Unlike many Tri swims this body of water is actually open for swimming.  Johnson's beach is open from 10-6.

I'm flying in early on Friday and wouldn't mind dinner Friday or Saturday.  Keep me posted what you decide.

Getting excited for the race.  I'm probably just going to use it as a training day.  Haven't put in the mileage that I need to really race hard, and after racing Eagleman last month, don't want to feel hurting afterwards.  Also, I'd be up to drive the course with anyone.  Not used to riding hills so much and don't want the surprise sunday morning.

Huh.  I didn't consider that part.  Does that mean that we can't be in the water before 10?

That would be my guess but perhaps they have extended hours for the weekend????????  I got the hours from the Johnson's Beach website.

Swim Practice

I am coming from Texas, and arriving on July 17th into the Napa area. I was wondering if we'll have some times we can practice swim, in the area where the race will be to get accustomed to the Russian River?

Steve, Johnson's Beach is open to the public daily from 10am-6pm so you can certainly practice the swim prior to race day.

I've been there really early in the morning once and you could technically walk down to the beach/water with no problem. I don't know if someone would come out and yell at you later...but it's absolutely accessible.

There are multiple other swim beaches on the Russian River as well:
http://www.sonoma-county.org/parks/pk_hvet.htm
http://www.russianrivertravel.com/parks-steelhead.htm(this one is reasonably close to the race start)

We're renting a cottage on the river in Healdsburg so I'll probably just swim there when we arrive.
