Moss Park is my favorite place to race, they are always small, and pretty well run...
But last year's Wildman was so cold I couldn't even undo my helmet when I got off the bike cause my hands were frozen...I think it was 40 degrees with 20-30mph winds, ugh!

I'm sticking to April and later races for 2008

I did a Wildman sprint 3 years ago.  I really did not like the transition area setup, I spent 10 minutes picking up dead tree parts out of the entry, loved the run course though.  I've heard buttar has improved it but I haven't gone back.

I did Sommersports TriAmerica race in Clermont last April and really liked the venue.  This upcoming year Sommer sports is doing it earlier, April 6th so that's appears to be my early season tri plan.

This will be my first as well - actually doing the myFirst Tri - which just has a little shorter swim, at the end of the pack, so you are not kicked as much. Going to start off doing this one, since I have 7 tris lined up (in my mind and on paper for next year, increasing in difficulty and length). All are in Central Florida. Planning on ending the year with 2-3 Olympic distance tri's. I am mentally ready, and have started training everyday - running 4 times/wk, lifting 2 times/wk, Riding 1 time/wk (plus trainer), Swimming 1 time/wk, and Core everyday. I have lost 8 lbs and I was not that big to begin with (gaining muscle now). And this is about 8 weeks after I had knee surgery.

Hey Chris,

What races are you looking at? Being your in Brevard (me too), I'm sure the Health First & Pineappleman are on it.

PS - I know Steve too!

3/15/08 - Wild Man 3 Sprint Triathlon (MyFirst) - Orlando
~4/19/08 - Publix Family Fun Weekend Sprint - St. Augustine
~5/31/08 - Rotary Pinapple Man Sprint - Melbourne
6/29/08 - Baldwin Park Sprint - Orlando
7/19/08 - Moss Park Tri Festival Sprint/Olympic - Orlando
8/23/08 - Fall Tri Festival Olympic - Orlando
~9/20/08 Disney Triathlon Olympic - Orlando
~10/7/08 Space Coast Triathlon Olympic - Cocoa (iffy)

This is my tentative plan. It can change if I break something, or I just don't think I can do one that month. My main goal is the Disney Tri. That is what is pushing me to do them. And really this year it is all about completing them (hopefully with bettering times). Could care less if I place. If I am not completely broken, next year I will focus on beating myself, and possibly training for 1/2 marathon. Still in the learning mode and am feeling good - fitness wise so far.

This schdule may look insane, but they are increasing in length gradually, so in my mind they are doable. And I am not trying to break any records, just do them. So I think I will do well.

Steve is great - has been giving me great advice!

Cat -

Will do (meet up). There are probably ~50 MyFirst participants (maybe less???). So odds of finding each other will be great. I'll make sure I have a neon pink sign that says "Cat ?" (j/k). Should be fun - I have been pounding the pavement too hard and have bruised feet - so taking it easy until Saturday. That is when some of us are doing a little virtual holiday camp to make sure we do not sit around during our off week. And since I do not want a worse injury, I am only doing non-running items. Talk to you later!

timing of the race worked well for me - it is about 2-3 months before the season up here starts so I will use this race (my first) to guage what I need to do to prep for the rest of the season....

and well, why not?

Cat,

My first event as well. Can't wait to get there but at the same time still very nervous about the swim. I'm doing the my first tri race so the shorter distance is a little reasuring.

Any idea what the expected water temperature is? Still trying to decide if I should be saving up for a wetsuit for my first race or leave to my 2nd in June.

Anyway good luck and maybe I'll see all of you there
Angelo

Water temp around here depends a lot on when a cold front passes.  When I did the Wildman it was help in April and I needed a wetsuit, water temp was in the 60's.  3 out of 4 FL races I've done in April I wore a wetsuit.  The only one I didn't was my 1st tri and wish I did, the water was 66F and my calfs got cramped at the end and had a hard time breathing with it that cold.

totally get the wetsuit. got mine one sale....might need a smaller one for racing though - though my weight is stable I keep shrinking....all that muscle.

so I am glad for the buoyancy the wetsuit will give me too.....

I swam 3200m last night with the master's....made me feel good about the 400m we swim in March!

3200m huh? you're a rock star! I'm still trying to figure out how to breath without sucking water=)

I've found a few wet suit options for around $100-125 on ebay but I'm not sure the difference from one to the other. any suggestions on where and what to look for?

Thanks

Cat,
Your rocking!  But remember 440 yards, in cold water, potentially with wind driven waves, is not 3200m in a pool.  Just saying!

Angelo,
Take a look at the the Promotion wetsuits.  The have great customer service and if you call them first, they are more then willing to help you get the right suit.  BT has a 10% off code too.  I went this route when I purchased mine based on feedback for others on BT.  I have the Power Glide sleeveless (green trim).  The Fluid Drive version is $40 cheaper.  If I had intentions of doing more cold water swims I would have bought a full sleeve WS or the sleeveless & the available top.

I checked the size I would need at Sports Authority, and then bid/won one on eBay for ~$40-45 with shipping (brand new). Of course it is all about timing and luck on eBay. But since you have a little time and you are in a warmer place, you might be able to try eBay for a week or two before going out and getting one at the store. Just a thought. I'll see you there! And Cat, myself, and you can all motivate eachother.

$40! Nice, I saw a few for sale on ebay as well, that might be the best route for me. No stores down here in the keys to check my size but I'm pretty sure something along the lines of a medium will fit.

Are you training with your wetsuit on to get used to the feel of it?

I am about to start - our community pool is closed when it is 40 degrees outside, so there is a hamper in me getting into the pool the next two days. I will probably start wearing it 1X a week, since planning on swimming 2x a week from now on. If it helps - I am a medium at (now) 5'10" - 145lb - with semi athletic build (working on that).

Also, I get a shorty (short sleeves and legs) As in FL it is not cold most of the time (I know you would know), and since you prob would not need the suit from May-Nov you could get away from getting a long suit (would think it is hard to get out of at transition). My thoughts.

One other thing, if you sign up for Sports Authorities newsletters, they send you all sorts of coupons/deals. Used it to get googles (oh course I have a Sports Authority up here in Central FL).

I live in Islamorada at mile marker 90. but I'm not from here...I just moved down from Denver CO and we're loving it so far.

You and I are similar size, I'm 5'11" and 160, what size suit did you end up getting? I know each manufacturer has their own sizing chart but they all appear to have something like a medium.

Medium - and it is not horrible (but still tight (as it should be). I think you would be a med. Large are a lot bigger than the mediums from what I saw.

Chris,
Angelo,

FYI, be weary off wetsuits not designed for swimming if you buy one with sleeves.  Shoulder fatigue will most likely be a result.  This is based on past BT testimonials and 1 person I know who did this.  Also a non-swimming WS is designed for warmth without need of rubber thickness in key areas.  A swimming (tri) wetsuit may be designed with different neoprene rubber & thickness in front vs. the back to help with overall balance (flotation).  The follwoing is from Promotions website:

Why don’t other types of wetsuits work for swimming?

While just about any wetsuit will keep you warmer in the water, wetsuits built for other sports don’t work well for swimming. Sure, you could put one on and swim a few lengths of the pool, but even for semi-serious swimming they won’t cut it. Here are some of the most common problems:

Non-Specific Swimming Wetsuit Design

Result of Poor Fit:
Restriction: Most wetsuits aren’t designed with the arm mobility you need for swimming. You will tire quickly from working against the wetsuit.
Water Exchange: Some wetsuits look similar to swimming wetsuits, but don’t have the special necks or armhole seals. Water flowing into the wetsuit slows you down, and makes you cold.
Wrong type of seams: Less expensive wetsuits use seams that can chafe, leak, and add drag. You’ll be uncomfortable, colder and slower.
Wrong Materials: Swimming wetsuits use special neoprenes not found in other wetsuits. Even if you don’t care about speed, the flexibility of swimming wetsuit neoprene is unmatched.

Thanks Donto!

The info you gave is great. I am still in the new phase, so I am still thinking about money/cost than perfect function/fit. Once I know I love it (Tri's) as I think I will, then I will start budgeting for the goodstuff.

You have a large amount on knowledge and experiance on pretty much everything tri related.

Thanks Again!
