Subject: Crank length

Thanks to Santa, I just upgraded to FSA carbon cranks.  They are a little longer than the crangs I was using (172.5 compared to 170).  After 2 long rides this weekend, I am having some pain in my right IT band.  I have never had this issue before.  Is a 2.5mm difference in length enough to throw off my fit.  I am thinking about bringing it back to the LBS.

The first time I had IT band issues it was due to changing running shoes.  In my experience, almost anything change can aggravate the IT band.

I would not worry about it... That is such a minuscule amount that it will not make much of a difference at all.

Did you lower your seat to compensate for the longer crank?

That might be it, but it's probably worth asking the person who did your fit to take a look at it.

I would say possible but unlikely - 2.5mm is an incredibly small change (about 1/10"). Something to check but there is probably something else that is leading to the issue.

I would lower the seat, yes it is a small amount but I had similiar issues with different seat brands sitting at different levels.

I was going to ask if a crank on the sidewalk looks longer than a crank in the grass, but you beat me to it.
