Run

Was supposed to run for 60 minutes but I just weren't feelin' it and I figure it can't hurt to take it a little easy on the running in the beginning anyway considering my limited "base".

Man, it's amazing the amount of dysfunction in my family right now. I have two older brothers. One did time in a medium security prison for a few years about a decade ago for drug possession/distribution. He now lives in my mom's basement with his kid (and has another kid with a lady and just met him about a year ago--he's 18). He never has a job more than a year, and with his insane tax return last year (like 1/2 of his income, seriously) he started an auto detailing business. In Council Bluffs, Iowa. I asked him what he was going to do the other 6-8 months out of the year when people don't wash their cars because it's either raining or snowing, and he didn't have an answer. Now he's working for someone again (didn't see THAT coming!) My other brother got divorced from his wife maybe 5 years ago because he cheated not once, but twice! He goes and visits the kid they have together MAYBE once a year, and he has another kid with mistress #2 who's probably 5 or 6 years old now (never sees him or her either--actually I think she might be married). He got fired from his job a couple weeks ago and he's been going to the casino, bought an iPad, and is planning on going to S. Padre for spring break (he's 31 years old and hangs out with the college-age kids down at Pittsburgh State Uni). He was about to get his car repossessed until my dad stepped in and paid off the loan and demanded that my brother borrow against his 401(k) which he did, so now he has to pay penalties and taxes on THAT too because of the aforementioned firing. Oh and with all the smart money decisions he's been making lately he also hasn't been paying child support. Whoa, ladies, chill out--he's single and available! No need to make a mad rush for this fine specimen. It's just a vicious cycle of stupid decisions followed by enabling by my parents. I was shocked that my mom responded to brother #2's first cheating by getting mad AT HIS WIFE!!! Talk about blood being thicker than water! I'm thankful that this fruit happened to fall far from the tree and I've met a virtuous wife who not only makes good decisions herself but keeps me in check as well so I don't do too much stupid stuff. Just had to get that off my chest.

(supposed to only be 200 but I did an extra 100 so I could get 30 laps for my..... crap, I just realized I did 40 laps! My workout was only going to 1900 (38 laps) so I did an extra 2 to make it a round number. The Y is doing this "Y to Y swim challenge" where you swim from one Y to another and get a prize, then from another Y to another Y you get another prize, etc. I was thinking I was only going to get 28 laps so I shot for 30 (and got credit for 30) but completely scrooged up my math and actually did 40! D'oh!

Run

Ran late, ran easy, didn't walk at all which is a bit of a milestone for me for this kind of distance (heh, two and a half miles has become "this kind of distance"). It's because I did it on the treadmill so I was forced to keep my pace in check. Watched "What Would You Do?" where they marginalized people who disagree with same-sex marriage. Funny how that's okay, but it doesn't work in the other direction (not that I think marginalizing anyone is okay, just making a point).

Swamped with work!

toootally uneven pacing, due to the fact that we had 4 swimmers in the lane for most of the workout. It was just me and a lady for the first 500 and sometime in the next 500 these two chuckleheads just hopped in without warning anybody. I guess they just figured that the two great big signs at either end of the ONE available lap lane weren't written for them (the ones that say be courteous, the swimmers already in the lane have the right of way, let them know you're there, you know, that boring stuff). We made do even though one of them was an awful swimmer. The other wasn't bad but didn't have the endurance to go farther than 50 yards without a break at the wall. As a sign of comraderie I gave them both "knucks" as I exited, to show there weren't any hard feelings even though I swam up on them and passed them about a dozen times.

My heel has been having some brief bits of discomfort throughout the day, but didn't hurt a bit during my swim, which is odd sine it has hurt the last few swims at some point during the workout. So I'm not sure what to make of that. Actually, I'm gonna assume that it's getting better for swimming and is just a little sore from yesterday & saturday's run workouts plus yesterday's bike.

Spin on the trainer after the run. Watched a show I recorded off public TV that was talking about how Pluto shouldn't be considered a planet. Kind of interesting but I just couldn't make the legs do what they didn't want to do.

Not my most impressive run, and certainly nothing I'm going to go around bragging about, but I'll take it. Ran on Millie in the office because we have like a foot of snow on the ground. I ended up going shirtless, with the lights off, and the window wide open, and still boiled. Need to consider getting a fan to put on the shelf that's next to the TM. All in all I'd say I did well. Wanted to go long and slow, and that's what I did. Watched one of the Rev3 triathlons I had recorded, as well as the Ironman Coeur D'Alene. Our TM has a neat little book holder thing above the readout so I put my little 9-inch Netbook there and it functioned as my personal TV screen for the run :)

My new (and first, really) running mantra, in 4/4 time (x)=quarter rest: run-slow-now-(x) run-fast-la-ter stay-(x)-heal-thy
