Trainer - lunch time

The Monday evening ocean swims at La Jolla Shores with the tri club start this evening. I am staying out the the ocean until the incision is totally closed. It is close, but there is still a small hole where it continues to drain. I would also like the ocean to be a little warmer. April and I are going to meet for dinner this evening instead of ocean swimming. :-)

Morning solo run along the coast. Foggy again this morning.

Nap, grocery store, and maybe cleaning on my schedule for the rest of the day. I also have a library book to return.

Didn't make it to the library, but knocked off the nap, cleaning, and grocery store.

First century ride of the season - a character building ride today. Solo. Drove south to Chula Vista to ride around Olympic training center and Otay Lakes. Heavy fog this morning delayed my start. Hit EVERY red light on the 12 miles on Olympic Parkway. Did the 8 mile climb up HoneySprings and as difficult as this is, I prefer the climb over the descent. Fought with the wind while riding by the lake. New wheels are nice. I didn't notice any difference. Yep, the first 100 miler is all about building character.

Brick run. My body never felt like it clicked into a comfortable groove. I just kept pushing and moving and the pace ended up being good. It just didn't feel good.

Well, what I thought was a brake issue on the Trek actually ended up being a broken spoke. OK - I thought no big deal to fix it, but then learned that the broken spoke and EVERY other spoke on BOTH wheels was corroded where the spoke joins the wheel frame. UGH! The downside of living a few blocks from the beach is the salt in the ocean air leads to so much corrosion on everything!! We don't have air conditioning (most places here don't) and there is only minimal to no insulation since the windows are open almost every day. I noticed several months ago while dusting that the lamps are corroding. Every time I take in a bike they are replacing some bolt or screw due to corrosion. Bike guy says it is so common here. Back to the wheels - I needed new wheels. So, what I though would be a $100-$200 repair ended up be much, much, much more. I had the Bontrager 65mm deep that matched my bike (custom with the Project 1). Since there was so much corrosion and due to the age of the wheels, it was not worth the cost to have them rebuilt. I ended up purchasing the Bontrager Aeolus 5 (50 mm deep) for both front and rear wheel. My credit card is not happy with me, but I needed wheels. Still feeling nervous about such a purchase. I was really wanting to start saving money this year now that I have all the races paid for. I still have the Greece trip to pay for in November. I hate these big unexpected purchases. I know this is actually something that I will use - and use a lot. This is such an expensive sport! If I really want to get serious about really saving money, continuing with Ironman is not the way to go! ;-) Why do I love it so much?!?!?!

Early evening walk to UPS, library, and around the neighborhood for some steps.

Bought some Tegaderm last night at Target. Covered the area and got back in the pool this morning. Worked well as the area stayed dry. Still healing, but seems to be taking a very long time. Still a fairly deep hole from where the doc opened it and still drainage. I will give it until Monday (2 weeks since doc opened it) and will then call doc if there has not been dramatic change.
