TTX. 4785' climbing. 70F. Less smokey. Medium NW wind out. SW wind back.
Strong ride considering it was my third consecutive and a little shower over Breck put an outflow wind into my face coming back up the hill. Headwind out and headwind back. Fun.
Splits:
Vail Pass: 1:13:17
Swan Mountain: 2:24:28
Old TT s/e: 2:47:17
Climb to home: 8:39
Brick. Trail run w/Buddy. Tripped on a rock and almost fell but I caught myself with both palms. Unfortunately, that hurt my shoulder bad. Pain went away quick so I don't think any harm done.

TTX. 4296' climbing. One day off left me feeling strong today.
Splits:
Vail Pass: 1:12:33
Swan Mountain Pass: 2:22:27 (PR by 9 seconds)
Then instead of riding home I rode another lap around the lake to the Peak One Surgery Center picnic at the Dillon Marina where I met Melinda, my mom, and Buddy.
I was on PR pace at the top of the Swan Mountain but the rest of the route is faster and easier than my normal route because I don't have to ride the steep climb up to my house.
On lttle the climb from the lake up through Dillon I saw a guy about 200 yards ahead. By the turn onto the Hwy 6 shoulder, I had caught him. As I always do I got out-of-saddle to get up to speed on the flat road and passed him. As the road turned downhill I looked back (like always) to make sure this guy hadn't jumped on my wheel. Sure enough, there he was. So I stopped pedaling and moved right until he passed me. (I will not allow people I don't know on my wheel especially on fast downhills.) As he went by he said, "What are you doing man?" I said nicely, "I don't want you on my wheel."
He said something insulting and took off in a sprint. I continued to ride my normal effort behind him and he put about 100 yards on me. Then as always I could tell he couldn't maintain that effort and I started catching him. Since I knew I was going to turn off in a couple miles, instead of passing him I eased up behind him out of his draft, ate and drank. When it came to my turn back onto the bike path, he kept going on the road. Since the path is winding I thought I'd come out behind him but when the path met the road again the start of the Swan Mountain climb I popped out ~100 yards ahead of him. I could tell he wanted to pass me again on the climb based on his effort (the climb switchbacks so you can see people behind). I just rode my normal effort and dropped him easily. He must have imploded because eventually I couldn't see him behind me.
When I got to the top, I had PR'd to that point. Considering that I rode Hwy 6 easy, I must have pushed a little harder on the climb to keep this guy from passing me.
I try real hard to avoid the human nature of changing my effort based on other riders. If I'm catching someone slowly, instead of increasing my effort to pass I reduce my effort to make sure I can pass at the lower effort.
People that push hard to pass and then can't maintain that effort, bug me. I try real hard to never be "that guy".

TTX. 4785' climbing. 70F sunny, strong north wind.
Knew at my first split that I was weak today so I rode very easy. But by the end I was really trashed.
Splits:
Vail Pass: 1:17:12
Swan Mountain Pass: 2:36:34
Old TT s/e: 3:00:24
Climb up to home in 10:16
This ride ends my try for 1000 miles in August. Today, it was obvious that my body is screaming for some rest off the bike and I will listen with no riding for two days. Making round numbers is not worth putting myself at risk of injury or illness.
Trying to get 1000 miles this month considering:
1. The taper/recovery for a HIM,
2. A crash resulting in an AC separation,
3. The difficulty of these rides due to all the climbing,
was just too optimistic for me at this point.
August 27
TTX. 75F. Sunny and medium north wind. 4785' climbing.
Splits:
Vail Pass: 1:14:25
Swan Mountain Pass: 2:28:15
Old TT s/e: 2:48:32
Climb to home: 8:49
Trail run w/Melinda and Buddy to cabin and back on Flume Trail. Very slow beause Mel has injuries from a bike crash and Buddy doesn't run well with us both because he doesn't know where he should be, like, between us or out in front, etc.
