Pre-race routine:

Woke up and ate Honey Scooters (generic Honey Nut Cheerios). I then went for a walk in the rain to loosen things up. After bathing, getting dressed, and getting the kids dressed we cruised to Marysville.

Prior to the race, we stretched at the Horse's butt :) and also talked to Maria.
Event warmup:

Stretched.

Comments:

Maybe started a little fast, but kept a good consistent pace throughout. Had to continually tell myself to run my own race, which is something I've been reminding myself the whole week. Historically, whenever I come off of a good race, I always begin the next race to hard.

It was great to see so many familiar faces during the run. Something I'm not use to.

It was a wet run and had a nice tailwind going out, but a little bit of a headwind coming back. My legs were feeling quite heavy on the last part of the run. Probably from a mixture of: heavy training with no taper for this race, not many hills on my training runs, and not running on gravel roads.

The miles were clearly marked (a big thank you), but I think the distance between mile 2 and 3 was a bit long. I also think the final mile was cut a bit short. Wish I had a Garmin to see the exact distances. Here are my times:

mile 1-7:34
mile 2-7:26
mile 3-8:16
mile 4-7:49
mile 5-7:01

Overall Time-38:02 (official) 38:05 (my watch).
What would you do differently?:

Incorporate more hills and gravel roads into my training runs. I'll need more hills for the Kansas City Marathon.
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged to 8th street, down to center street, west to 6th street, south to broadway and then walked back up to Ehnen's Automotive parking lot.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Tired legs, run more hills, and run more gravel roads.

Event comments:

Good inagural race. The 5 mile course was well marked. Makalah and Ian were the only two participants in the 1 mile. I heard that course wasn't as well marked and no one was with the two youngsters running down the street. Mom thankfully helped guided them from the school to the finish line.

I really enjoyed the post race breakfast. Good stuff to eat and the water bottles were kind've cool.

I like these small town and personal races. I'd like to run it again next year.

Performance: Good
Course: Began on 7th and Broadway along the brick street. We then turned north on 8th street and went out in the country to the old stockyards. At that point, we hooked up with the Big Blue Trail and shortly after the bridge was the 2.5 mile turnaround. We then retraced our steps for most of the way until the old railroad depot station. At that point, we followed 7th street and finished next to Schroller's Body Shop. The course was varied and a bit challenging. The race began on brick, turned to pavement, then went to gravel, and finally crushed limestone. There were a few good challenging hills along the route. Welcome to the Flint Hills. :)
