  • Comments: After losing 105 pounds, completing my first half-Ironman wasn't about hitting a certain time... it was about FINISHING. The support on the course was nothing short of amazing, and I may have been one of the last to finish, but my 70.3 medal is just as shiny as the sub-5 hour racers'!

  • Comments: A 3 min PR. But it didn't feel like it on the day and it doesn't feel like it now. I set myself up for a 5:05 or less and didn't execute on the run. Clearly I didn't do enough consistent training - the move back to the UK has taken up some time, we have travelled quite a bit to visit places before we leave the US and Caroline taking up triathlons also compromised some of my training. But would I have changed any of that ? Nope. I don't have the level of commitment to this sport to trade 15 mins on the course for life experiences like we have had in the last 6 months. Eagleman finds you out in a way that Columbia doesn't. So the cream really does rise to the top : it is a race for elites that some of us lesser athletes 'participate' in. But it is a privilege to be on the same course as some of those athletes. I saw TJ and Crowie on the bike course tanking it along. You can't say that 'I saw Tiger on the 11th while I was putting out on the 5th today'. Another great race by

  • Comments: This was my first "real" HIM, i.e. one with a swim. I learned after signing up that this race drew more competitive athletes, and it didn't disappoint. The course is flat and fast, but hot. I wasn't able to run much the last few weeks due to ankle issues, so I didn't feel quite ready for the run. I t didn't matter anyway, since the heat was holding back any real effort. On cooling, I brought a small hand towel, that seemed to work pretty well. Soaking it with ice and water, I'd wring it out on my head.

  • Comments: I loved everything about this race and would definitely do it again. The pro forum was fun to attend. I loved the ability to tuneup the day before in the water, and on the bike. It would have been nice to stay closer to the event, but all things considered this was a great experience for a first HIM.

  • Comments: The volunteers were fantastic! They helped make this race as great as it could be. This includes all the wonderful residents who set up sprinklers for the runners as well as people blasting music like the Virginia Tech party house! My own ability let me down this race and I will strongly consider refraining from entering any more 70.3 races until I have more time to properly prepare. I might also not do another M-dot race for a while. I can do the half-iron distance at other events for less money and with better course support. I do not mean to repeat myself here, but I am truly disappointed that they ran out of cups at multiple aid stations!

  • Comments: This is only my 3rd triathlon ever (2 sprints previously) and my first 70.3, so I was very happy just to finish! My goal time was 5:30.00, although I really just wanted to cross that finish line! I beat my goal time by about 7 minutes, so I was very happy. This event was amazing. The support of the community and volunteers is like nothing I've ever seen! The cola and snow cones were great on the run and the VT party house on the run definitely gave me a good laugh. Great race and I am looking forward to coming back again next year!

  • Comments: Cant say enough good things about this race. It's relatively local for me and I have a great place to stay nearby. The organization is awesome. They treat the athletes really well. The course can really test you in a lot of ways and the competition is top notch. Can't wait to do it again - even if it will be 99 degrees.

  • Comments: Thank goodness for all the volunteers and the aid stations at every mile on the run. Without them, I'd not have been able to finish. This is a really great race. Love the atmosphere. Love being surrounded by uber-fit people (even if they are uber-intimidating). Everyone was very friendly. Yesterday I told myself I would never do another HIM but as I write this --- who knows. I am very proud of myself for having signed up, trained for, started, and finished an HIM. I rewarded myself with a medium cherry-dip vanilla ice cream cone from Dairy Queen on the way home.

  • Comments: Others have said it, but this race is just first class all the way and justifies the cost of the race. The volunteers are just superb. Every station was well provisioned. Best of all, the town and the townspeople really embrace the event. Coming through mile 12 a girl had buckets of cold water and was asking people if they wanted to be doused. It felt great. It is not the greatest race for spectators, but my kids had a great time playing in the river after the swimmers were out of the water.

  • Comments: Tricolumbia puts on a fantastic event. The race support is outstanding. At one point I missed a water cup from a guy on the course. This guy decided to run at my pace and try to catch me to get me the water that I dropped. I mean that's impressive. I can't thank those people enough. Even the ladies handing out the water and soda in the post race food area. It was He!! hot and they stood there until late in the afternoon with smiles working hard. A great race and a fantastic experience. Oh and Im going to Kona! Ole!

  • Comments: This is such a great event. It’s really amazing the way the town of Cambridge comes out to support it. We showed up at our hotel to find a giant table of Gatorade, bottled water, cereal bars, etc. waiting for us. And the hotel opened breakfast up at 4am so we could grab a bite before leaving. And the volunteers and support on the course was just great. It seemed like every 10-20 houses somebody had set up a sprinkler to run through or was pumping music over the loudspeakers. I felt bad not having the energy to even thank the volunteers on the run course – I hope they know! In the end, I don’t really know how to evaluate my performance. This was my first HIM, and I signed up hoping to break 6 hours. And I feel like I could have done in on a cooler day – I definitely had strength left that I didn’t get to use. The swim and bike went as well as I could have hoped. But the run was just so frustrating with so much left in the tank. I just don’t know what I could have done diff
