Subject: Cold Weather Bike Clothing

I am new to cycling and would like to continue through the cold weather. Are there any MUST HAVE cycling clothing that I should purchase to be able to continue riding in the cold? What type of pants should I purchase? What brands does anyone recommend?

Thanks in advance.

I've got both Cannondale and Pearl Izumi tights, both work fine and keep me warm.  I'm also very fond of my toe covers to keep my feet warm, especially when they get damp from sweating.

Don't forget, buy layers, helps a ton.

Full finger gloves!!!

I got my bike in the winter and one of the first rides I ever did it was freezing cold and by the end of the ride my fingers were completely numb and I couldn't feel the brake levers.

For legwear either full length cycling trousers or a combination of cycling shorts and leg warmers, which is what I prefer because if you do happen to get a little hot then you just take the leg warmers off.

Booties are a good idea too to stop your feet getting cold.

To piggyback this thread, can anyone recommend any specific brand and model jackets and/or thermal jerseys?

Neoprene booties and wool cycling socks,  good windproof gloves and ear protection are mandatory for me

I live (lived I guess I could say now) in VT for 15 years.

I really liked craft tights, and I really like nashbar tights- they're like apples and oranges though.

Get a tight skull cap for under you helmet.  H36igh socks help me too.

A vest is always invaluable, and I've grown very fond of fleece under a wind shell.

XC skiing stuff translates well to cycling I've found.

If it's REALLY cold, a face mask or "buff" can be really nice.

As for specifics- you can't go wrong with Craft, although you pay out the a$$ for it.  Check out the nashbar brand stuff for cheap good quality stuff that'll last you a season or two.  The craft stuff will last you 5-6 seasons or more.

(PS- I've biked when it was 32 (20 miles), and ran when it was -24 (5k), and XC skied in Alaska when it was -37 (90mins), to just brag a bit)

Bike Gore Wear is the best as it is truly wind proof and keeping the wind off me is the key to being warm. Performance carries the brand at good prices.

Pearl Izumi stuff with Amphib is good..I have their booties, glooves and tights.

I have 6 or 7 winter bike jackets, 4 pairs of gloves, 4 hats, and 3 pairs of tights and I wear different combinations depending on temp, sun/shade, and wind.

My go to jacket is the Bike Gore that I wear often over a regular winter jacket.

Check them out here .
