Veteran 240![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: Numb foot while running..what in the world????So, I went for a five mile run today and was looking forward to it. About half way through it though, my foot went numb. It started in the big toe, then spread to the outer edge of my foot. I stopped to walk it out, took my shoe off, wiggled my foot around and then relaced my shoe. Needless to say, it threw off my flow, I couldnt quite get back into my rhythm and I ended up having to take walk breaks to kinda just work it out. So, please tell me I am not the only one that this has happened to. In disecting the problem, I do recall the area around my achilles feeling a bit tight...could that be it? Does it go beyond that? Perhaps my calf as a whole? Any insight would be helpful because I definitely dont want to go through that again. |

Make sure your shoes are wide enough too. I need a shoe with a wider toe box so that when my feet swell on longer distances I am not squeezing the nerves in my feet. I have already had two neuroma's removed from my left foot as it is. Have you been fitted for shoes? Sometime the running shoe that seems ok for shorter runs does not work for the long run and you need to be fitted for your shoe at a running store. Age of your shoes. If your shoes are old they may not have the cushion left to take on the pounding of longer runs. I only put about 400 miles on mine, in part due to the fact that I stride heavy and need shoes with good cushion and inserts. |

Regular 86![]() ![]() ![]() Memphis, TN | Subject: RE: Numb foot while running..what in the world????I used to have this problem with the shoes I started running in. I went to a running store and had them fit me for a real running shoe, and that fixed it. Your feet will swell quite a bit when you run any kind of real distance... shoes that seem like they fit fine will end up being too tight, causing numbness. |

As noted above, the shoes might be too old, or too tight, or laced oddly. I recently got a new pair of shoes and when I set up my Yanks on them, I had the one too tight, which gave me a similar problem over the course of about a month's use. So, details about the shoe, the lacing, the running conditions (too hard/soft surface?) and if you ever had similar problems before would be needed to give you useful answers. |

Never really was a problem training but my foot swelled during a race and the shoes were too tight and had more pressure on nerves which cause numbness. Be really careful with yanks and other quick lace systems they can easily be laces too tight.

Veteran 240![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Numb foot while running..what in the world????Ok, it looks like background is needed. I am using a pair of shoes that I was fitted for at a running specialty store. They have about 200 miles on them so far so they should have a ways to go. They have a wider toe box than my old pair which used to give me the numb foot so they took that into consideration. The route and distance I ran was the same as last weekend, where I had one of my best runs ever. This week, I may have laced my shoes a bit tighter...I remember tigthenting them for my shorter run, at the beginning of last week after this same run. So that could be the culprit. Also, my achilles/calf area was tight so it could have been that as well. Hmm, I also did a different pair of socks. But they were thinner than last week and felt a lot better when I was done. Hmmm I think I will need to do several things for next week, make sure that the laces arent too tight, make sure that my calves are nice and loose throughout the week and maybe use my thinner, less constricting socks for the long run. We'll see.... Thanks for all the input. Edited by Makukula 2008-09-28 9:43 PM |

Extreme Veteran 326![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Zephyrhills, FL | Subject: RE: Numb foot while running..what in the world????i have seen people tie their laces too tight which in turn causes numbness as well. i would suggest getting some yanks so you know that you're not tying them too tight, and you can rule that out as the problem. i'd be surprised if it had anything to do with your achilles or calf, but im not a podiatrist, so no diagnosing for me, just my personal opinion. if you had your shoes fit by a store, then you should be able to rule that out as well. if you notice any bulging on the outer side of your shoe just behind where your pinkie toe is, you may need a width in whatever shoe you're wearing. good luck and let us (or at least me) know what happens. im curious to see the outcome. |
