Subject: Bike shorts for a tri
So I'm getting ready for my first tri this month and all I have is a pair of Cannondale bike shorts. Is there a way to keep my chamois from absorbing so much water or do I really just need to go get a pair of tri shorts?

I don't think you can decrease the absorption of the chamois, but you can certainly do a triathlon with normal bike shorts. Tri shorts are better, but for your first tri I would say go with what you've got. The shorts will dry out a little bit on the bike too.

Forget about how much water they'll absorb for a minute. Go run for 5 miles in your bike shorts and see if you can live with them. I doubt you'll be able to without feeling like you're running in a diaper.

Bike shorts are not so bad. I ran my second tri in them and they dried out fairly quickly. Chafing was present, but very minimal and bearable...

I'd go with what you have for now, and then buy some tri shorts when you get a chance...

BTW, DeSoto brand tri shorts are my favorite.

Good luck on your tri...

But everything is on sale now so it's a good time to make your purchases while it's cheap!

I don't mind running in my bike shorts.

The wet pad I think would be miserable. Yesterday I did a cyclo cross bike race in the rain..I opted to wear my tri shorts just so the pad wouldn't be  all water laden.

Now is sale time...invest a few bucks in tri shorts.

The bike shots creats a drag in the water.  You might be better off wearing your swim trunks, then slip on the bike shorts at T1, though it may not be comfortable.

At my first tri I wore my swim suit for the swim, put on bike shorts for the bike and run.  Running in bike shorts doesn't bother me.

I wore bike shorts for a tri once and OMG....the chafing is HORRIBLE!  Don't do it...please...it hurts even remembering...

Did an oly and a half this year in bike shorts, and they were beat up bike shorts, baggy spandex, of course the pad was beaten down too. No problem. Of course I practiced running and swimming in them prior so I knew I would have no chaffing issues.

The problem with swimming in them, I think, is the spandex or licra or whatever it is is not made to deal well with water. I swam in mine all summer, they are beaten bad now, spandex falling apart, think it has to do with the chlorine.

I got a pair of trishorts for my ironman, WELL WORTH the 70 bucks. WELL WORTH IT. So much more comfortable.

So, yeah, you could do it, but if you get into the sport, get a pair of tri shorts.
