Have you ever made a decision that was so huge it positively or negatively impacted your life? I am prepping for knee surgery and need to get my fat a$$ in shape again.
I want to have a full race year in 2009 (3-4 sprints, 2 oly's, and at least 2 HIM's). I want/need to lose about between 15-20 pounds, and unlike years past, keep it off. I know I need to alter my lifestyle even more than last year when I was prepping for my HIM.
I will quit smoking, start eating the correct portions (already eat good), and spend more time on the road, at the gym, and at the pool.
Started as a question yes, but I guess ultimately I am writing down my goals for all to see.

Resigning from the Naval Academy in '92 .......

While I would have been proud to serve (having been in the military family all my life as well as serving in Desert Storm with the Army as an elisted), if I had stayed in I would have probably been dead in Afghanistan or Iraq since I was either going to be a 1) S.E.A.L. or 2) Combat pilot.

I don't regret it at all, but I often wonder how my life would have been if I stayed there and graduated ......

I interpret your post here as a form of a commitment to yourself. Congratulations on this commitment!

To answer your question - I have made many decisions that have had profound impacts on my life, but they never seemed to be monumental at the time. For example, I almost haphazardly decided where to go to college. Had I not made that decision I would not have met my wife, gotten my current job, lived where I do now, or have the baby son I am so proud of right now.

In your case, I think that the road back to having the triathlon season you want is going to require many small decisions, i.e. you must choose to get out the door and do your workout each day. So each day you are making a small decision. Each time you crave a smoke you will make a small decision. Each time you eat a meal you will make a small decision.

Best of luck to you. Choose wisely.

in 2006 we adopted our son from guat. On the flight back I could not sit down due to a back issue. At the time I was on blood pressure meds and really out of shape. I decided then that something had to change. I have lost 56 pounds and don't take meds any more. I hope that choice has changed my life. So far so good.

I threw away the smokes 3 weeks ago after 15 yrs.  I was tired all the time and had headaches every night.  I was to the point where I didn't even want to play with my kids.  I was basically a bum.  I started training and lost 8 lbs already.  I feel like a million bucks now.  I'm a sexual T-Rex in bed, my wife is amazed.  I have more energy than I could ever imagine.  Keep it up, you won't believe the results.

8 years ago or so. Saw Lance Armstrong. Bought a Wal-Mart bike. Unfortunatley quit a few times along the way, but I'm down about 70 pounds from my weight at that time.

Yes, numerous - one particularly relevant one is when I decided to start getting into shape.  I was 236 lbs then.  One life change leads to another, I stopped drinking because I found I don't have much will power when it comes to food if I was drinking (underminding my goal).  A few years later I've done a number of marathons a HIM and have gotten down to ~160.  It takes a decision to change and then the follow through with an unwavering commitment.  The competitions just help motivate me to get out the door.

Congrats on your commitments. They say writing them down helps to make them real.

I also have done what you're doing. Some of my "life altering decisions" were the same, and some were different then yours. The one thing that helped me stay the course, was to seek as much positive input as I could. Books, people, hobbies, etc. They all had to be positive, and that kept me positive, and so I changed my life thusly.

 Good luck!
